I have to mention this, Dec. 28 is the date I got married in 1963.  Hard to believe that 49 years have passed.  Was only married for 10 years but I got two wonderful daughters from that.   After we were divorced, Ron eventually moved to Washington, D.C. and while filming a story on ultra-lights for his TV show, he was killed when the ultra-light crashed.  That was in June 1982.  The girls were 11 and 13.

Clear.    We still feel bad.   We had Wendi and she doesn't feel too good.  She got our mail and she & Mother went for our milk.  Bro Zion  stopped a minute after prayer meeting.

Footnote:  They seem to have been sick for quite a few days - maybe should have gone to the Dr.  Wendi is her granddaughter and she is probably out of school this week after Christmas.  Her Mother is Janice, Estelle's youngest daughter.  I am guessing that Bro Zion was the current preacher at the Deep Springs Baptist Church.  Guess he had to check up on her as it is Wednesday and she wasn't in the church.

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas Day sharing love of family and friends and lots of good food.    I went with Leah and Kenny and Max to Kenny's familys dinner.   There were probably 50 or more people there = lots of little kids and some really loud adults..   I think the noise is louder for me because I live alone and regulate my own noise level.  Max also does not care for all the loud noise.   Still I go knowing that and I deal with it. The crafts that the women make and exchange is just a hoot.  I love to see what they are making.  There are some good things and some things that are not so good.

Would love to see what Maude Hyatt was selling in the yard sale.  Maude and her first husband, Ralph owned one of the  filling stations in the neighborhood.  It was also a grocery/variety store where you could get just about anything you needed from crackers to nails.  I remember when my Daddy would take us down to Deep Springs to visit relatives, he would sometimes stop at Paul's filling station and I would get to have a fudgecicle - chocolate ice cream on a stick - my favorite.

Clear, cloudy.  Got cooler all day.   I went to tobacco market early.  Got the check and went to the bank and then took Randy's check down to his house.  To church tonite.

Footnote:  The tobacco market was a huge warehouse in Pennington Gap, Va. and it is where all the tobacco farmers in the county took their harvest to be sold to the highest bidder.  I wonder what she had to identify her tobacco in order to get a check.  Must have been assigned numbers.  Randy is the guy she hired to help her raise the tobacco and he got it ready for the market, so he got some of the money they made from the sale of the tobacco.   It is a lot of hard work to raise tobacco and I am sure she didn't get enough money to pay for all the hard work.   But that is the life of a farmer.  A lot of hard work!!!

Clear.   I helped Randy in tobacco awhile.  Allso washed some.  Baked Jennings & us a pie.  Then took Aunt Rosalee to grocery store and visited up at Reba's a while.

Footnote:     Randy is the guy who is grading the tobacco, getting it ready for market.  Jennings is her brother who lives nearby.  Aunt Rosalee is married to Millard Baker, Estelle's mother's half-brother.  They also live nearby.   Reba is her sister-in-law who lives nearby too.    Just one big happy neighborhood and she kept a close eye on all of them.    Wish she was in my neighborhood and would bring me a pie.  Who does that anymore????

I'm  glad to get back home and get some things organized.  Still have no heat.  Gotta call someone, it is about 45 here  outside and inside.    Slept good though under that electric blanket.  Rainy here.

Clear, cloudy, rain.    I washed & dried a load of clothes.  Helped Randy in the tobacco a bit.  Canned 7 quarts of cushaws.

Footnote:    Don't know who Randy is other than the man who shared in the work it takes to get a field of tobacco to market.     What do you do with canned cushaws?

On another note:   We are still talking about Molly Delph Reasor.  It seems she was married to Letch Reasor - not Henderson.           I am back home now - Monday - Oct. 29.   Turned my heat on but can't get the furnace to come on by itself.    Have to turn the switch to ON as the AUTO doesn't seem to trigger it.   Very cold here.  So I am guessing it will cost me all the money I made in Alabama to get the "dadjim" furnace fixed.

Clear, cloudy, rain.   This morning started out nice , but then had a shower.  Millard & I went to church.  He is all short of breath and didn't go tonite.  Janice, Wendi and I went to Magic Mart awhile.

Footnote:     The weather sounds just like our weather.   Millard is her husband.  Janice is her daughter and Wendi is her granddaughter.

I am still in Kingsport (Friday night) with Mother.   She is doing great.   The huge hole they have made on her leg - to remove the small cancer spot- is healing very nicely.  She got to get in the shower today and we dressed the place ourselves.    She is going to be OK.     I am planning to go home on Sunday or Monday - depending on her.   I have a show in Cinti next Sat.   so got to get home and unpack the car so I can pack it again for the show.     I'll try to get back on schedule next week.

Clear.   A real nice sunshiny day.  I went for Millard by 10 oclock.  We got home and eat lunch and Millard took a walk.  Curt spent the evening.  Jennings & Elizabeth, Roy & Edith were here.  Rosemary called tonite.

Sandra sent a message that Molly Delph Reasor was married to Henderson Reasor.  She   cleaned and worked for the neighbors in their houses.  She lived mostly in the little houses that people had on their farms for the farm hands - the sharecroppers.   She had a son and a daughter and I think Sandra said that neither of them could hear or speak.  Mother said that Henderson liked the liquor and never did much of anything.

Cloudy.   We had rain last nite and cooler this morn.   Millard woke up sick this morn and we were at the hospital by 8.   I come back and took Aunt Rosalee to get groceries and back to the hospital, and back.    Wore out getting up so early.   Millards test didn't prove anything but Dr. Taylor thought it best to keep him a couple of days.

Footnote:   Millard is her husband.   Aunt Rosalee is Uncle Millard Baker's wife.  He is Lula Baker Reasor's half-sister.

I am back in Kingsport with Mother.   She had a cancer spot removed from her leg last Thursday and they told her to leave the bandage on for 24 hours.  Of course, she couldn't wait to see it , so took the bandage off Friday morning and started bleeding.  I left for Tuscaloosa, Ala.  Thursday afternoon .  Doug had to take her back to the Dermatologist so they could change the dressing and stop the bleeding.    I had a good show in Alabama, weather was great and the crowd was huge.    So today, I drove from Tuscaloosa back to Kingsport to see about Mother.    I will stay a couple days and see how she gets along.

I have made it to Birmingham, Ala. on my way to Northport for a show called Kentuck this weekend.  Weather is so nice and should be good all weekend.     I took Mother to the Dermatologist this morning and they cut and burned a place on her face and then cut a big place on her leg.  She had problems with the needles to numb the spots but was OK after that.  She is one tough woman.  I just called her and she said she has some feeling in the spots now and they are sore.      I will catch up the rest of the days on the blog now.

The weather in 1979 is about like our weather in 2012.  We had frost this morning and it is about 38 degrees.  I'm not turning the heat on till I get back from Tennessee and Alabama in 3 weeks.  It was very cold at the show yesterday.  Standing on the hard street all day and being cold, I'm kinda creeky this morning.  Had a great show = huge crowd with money and they gave me some of it.  Well worth all the work.   Headed to Tenn. on Friday.  Doug's son, Travis is getting married in Knoxville on Sat.  It is outdoors so hope it warms up a bit.  Janice is going with me and Mother to the wedding.   Should be a fun day.  Then the following Thur. (Oct. 18) I will be driving to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to do a weekend show there.   Sometimes it is hot there and sometimes cold and rainy.  Hope for somewhere in between and no rain.

I am posting this on Sat. night as I have a show tomorrow and I have to set up the tent about 6 AM.  So I won't have time in the morning to do this.    It is a one day show 10AM-5PM and we have to be off the street by 7 PM.  So it will be a very long day and is supposed to be cold all day.   It is in a nice wealthly suburb of Cincinnati, about 20 minutes from my house(which is not located in the wealthly suburb).    Lots of babies in strollers and dogs on leashes but they all have money and I try to get as much of that as I can.

Footnote:    I knew she would bake some pies with that pumpkin she cooked.   Uncle Millard is a half-brother to her Mother, Lula Baker Reasor.   Jennings is her brother.   Both families live pretty close to her.

I remember seeing the men and women working in the tobacco once it was in the barn.  When I was little - maybe 10 years old- I remember helping (I'm sure I was in the way) Daddy grade the tobacco in a little house that was next to the big barn on the back road near where Uncle Jennings lived.  The little house had a stove in it and I remember it being so warm in there.   They put the tobacco on the tobacco baskets (don't remember just what they are called) and then take the load of baskets to Pennington to the tobacco warehouse where the big guys from the tobacco companies would come in and "steal" the tobacco.  They had an auction like sale and the highest bidder got the baskets of tobacco.   It was a big business in the 50's and 60's.  Almost every farmer was given a tobacco allotment.    I don't know what the business is like today for the farmers, but they are still raising tobacco somewhere, cause there are still way too many people smoking - they will be sick someday.

Footnote:   Charlie is Charlie Ely and he and Mary Lydia lived in Rogersville, Tenn.   Charlie is a first cousin to Estelle.  I found out yesterday from my Mother, Edith,  that Charlie was the son of Cynthia Reasor Ely.  Cynthia was the sister to Pappy, Martin Reasor,  Estelle's daddy.   Stephen, if that is not right, let me know.     Janice is her daughter who lives in Big Stone Gap and that is also where their bank was I guess.    Would be interesting to know just how much the farm machinery was worth then.

Rain.   Reba picked us up at 9 o'clock and we went across Blackwater Mountain to Rogersville to visit Charlie & Mary Lydia Ely , back up to Kingsport and visited Francis Ratliffe & boys and home about 6.

Footnote:  Reba is her sister-in-law, sister to her husband, Millard Ely.   Blackwater Mountain is a mountain with a road that goes from Virginia to Tennessee.  I don't remember ever being on it but I know about where it is - about 20 miles  West of Deep Springs. Rogersville is in Tennessee.    Not a mountain in Ohio that would come close to Blackwater Mountain.  Charlie  Ely is a relative of Millard and Reba's.  I'm not sure just how they are related.   I remember going to visit them.  They lived on a farm and had two sons.  Kingsport is about 30 miles East of Rogersville.  Francis Ratliffe was raised by Reba in Olinger, Va.  She is married to Bob Ratliffe and they had three children.  She still lives in Kingsport.

Follow up on the planting of seeds:   Redge wrote, "the seeds were wheat, barley, oats.  The reason to burn a tobacco bed was to kill the weed and grass seed before sowing the tobacco seed. "    P.S. You are so smart to know all this stuff.   I know you had to do all this stuff to the fields when you were a kid at home.   Farm life was never easy - still isn't.

Clear.  We worked around the house this morn.  Then went to the garden and dug the sweet potatoes.  To prayer meeting tonite.

Footnote:  Remember a couple days ago when she said that Curt had sowed seeds on the tobacco patch.  Well I didn't know why so I asked Redge to reply and here is what he said,  "We always sowed seeds on open ground before winter or rainy weather, called a cover crop.  It helped to hold the ground together."  I'm not sure what kind of seeds, but I guess maybe it was grass seed.    I remember people burning the tobacco bed.  I am guessing the ashes made the soil richer for starting the tobacco plants.  The farmers did a lot of work just to get a crop of corn or tobacco or hay ready.   A hard way to make a $ even today  when they have to deal with the weather too.    Our grocery bills just keep getting bigger and I don't know if that is getting kicked back to the farmer, I doubt it - the grocery stores just keep showing higher profits.        I love those fresh sweet potatoes baked in the oven, just a little butter right down the middle of them.

Clear, cloudy   Cloudy all morning.  I took Aunt Rosalee to grocery store.  Over to Betty's for milk & over to take Va. Shuler some.  Tonite Millard & I picked up Stell Kelly and went to Seminary for revival.

Footnote:  Aunt Rosalee is her aunt by marriage to Millard Baker, her mother's half-brother.  Betty is the neighbor with milk cows.  Virginia Shuler is her neighbor who doesn't drive and she gets things for her when she needs them.   Millard is her husband.  Stell Kelly is her good friend and neighbor.  Seminary is a small village about 5 miles northeast of Deep Springs, about half-way between Deep Springs and Big Stone Gap.   Seminary is where my Daddy, Roy Shuler was born and raised.  He was raised on a big farm and his Daddy, Hugh Shuler, was a farmer.  Daddy Shuler (my grandfather) took his milk, eggs and whatever vegetables he had to Big Stone Gap a couple times during the week and sold them.   He also had tobacco, cows, horses and a big pig pen.

Clear. I washed 3 loads of clothes. Stell Kelly was in a minute. Curtis come and sowed seed on our tobacco patch. Footnote: Stell Kelly is her good friend and a neighbor. Curtis is her brother-in-law (I think, unless there was another Curtis). I don't know much about sowing seeds in the tobacco patch but I'm guessing it has something to do with making the ground better for growing next year. Wish my Daddy was still here, I would ask him. Redge, send me a comment on what you know about the tobacco patch and I will pass it on.

Curt is her brother-in-law, I think. Janice is her daughter and Wendi is Janice's daughter. You can always have a good lunch when someone else fixes it.

Cloudy. We got the pump in and water in the house today. I have suffered with hemmaroids all day. Sit in water most of day. Bro. Zion was in a minute. Footnote: What can I say - water in the house is good - hemmoroids are bad - so the preacher stops by to make things better. Happy Birthday to Smith Kevin Reasor - born 1962.
