Rain. Reba picked us up at 9 o'clock and we went across Blackwater Mountain to Rogersville to visit Charlie & Mary Lydia Ely , back up to Kingsport and visited Francis Ratliffe & boys and home about 6.
Footnote: Reba is her sister-in-law, sister to her husband, Millard Ely. Blackwater Mountain is a mountain with a road that goes from Virginia to Tennessee. I don't remember ever being on it but I know about where it is - about 20 miles West of Deep Springs. Rogersville is in Tennessee. Not a mountain in Ohio that would come close to Blackwater Mountain. Charlie Ely is a relative of Millard and Reba's. I'm not sure just how they are related. I remember going to visit them. They lived on a farm and had two sons. Kingsport is about 30 miles East of Rogersville. Francis Ratliffe was raised by Reba in Olinger, Va. She is married to Bob Ratliffe and they had three children. She still lives in Kingsport.
Follow up on the planting of seeds: Redge wrote, "the seeds were wheat, barley, oats. The reason to burn a tobacco bed was to kill the weed and grass seed before sowing the tobacco seed. " P.S. You are so smart to know all this stuff. I know you had to do all this stuff to the fields when you were a kid at home. Farm life was never easy - still isn't.
