1980 Monday   Nice day.  Rosemary come for me before lunch.  I feel very well.  David Brewer, Maude & Ballard Ely, Smith & Sandra came, allso Janice & Wendi.  My Dr. come in before breakfast and I got ready to come home.  Elise Miller (Laster's wife) came in a minute this morning.

Footnote:  Rosemary is her daughter.  David Brewer, Maude and Ballard Ely are neighbors or relatives.  Smith and Sandra are her nephew and neice, the children of her brother, Everette.  Janice and Wendi are her daughter and granddaughter.  Elise Miller is a neighbor, I guess. 

1981  Tuesday   warm 80 degrees broke a record.  The men worked in the kitchen.  I worked everywhere.  Walter Short & Jennings were in.  I went for milk and found a forest fire in Dryden. Drove down there a minute. 

Footnote:  Walter Short was a neighbor.   Jennings is her brother.   Dryden is a community about 6 miles to the west.

1979 Millard was in hospital at Pennington with a virus from April 15 to April 22

Feb. 6, 1979  Jennings & Elizabeth went to Florida to join Lucille & Ralph, Branson, Opal and Cora.  Elizabeth was sick when she left and about the middle of Feb. she had a stroke and was in the hospital a long time.  Then later had trouble with heart rhythm.  They got home March 7.   Cora came for 2 weeks.  Elizabeth hasn't been at all well here in May.

1980 March 26 I entered Indian Path Hospital for surgery on tumor in my ear.  Had the surgery Mar. 27.  Come home Monday 31.  Rosemary & Redge come home. 

March 30, 1981 President Reagan was shot today. 

Feb. 11, 1979 Bud Culbertson, Janet & Kenny left the church in a mad spell and it sure split up the community.

1980 Sunday  Rainy warm.  Redge come early and stayed awhile then on home.  Francis come again this eve, allso Malissa Reasor & Herbert.  Glenn Graham and Acie(stepmother) come to see Mr. Graham and visited me too.  Paul Rutherford & son and Laster Miller come back tonite.  Laster had been in before and died later (April 3 of a heart attack. 

Footnote:  Redge is her son who lives in Charlotte, N.C.  Francis Ely Ratliff is her neice who lives in Kingsport - where Estelle is still in the Hospital.  Malissa Reasor and Herbert are cousins from Big Stone Gap.  Glenn Graham grew up in her neighborhood - don't know where he lived in 1980.  He went to school in Big Stone with me and Doug.  They called him "catbird".   Not sure who Paul Rutherford is.  Laster Miller lived in her neighborhood - I think. 

1981  Monday   rainy cloudy sunshiny.  Our carpenter's got started on the kitchen.  Jennings, Reba & Ruth were in.  I had to run up to town a bit.  Our president, Reagan got shot today. 

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother and Reba is her sister-in-law.  Ruth is her sister-in-law, married to her brother Everette.   Ronald Reagan was the president.  He was injured but survived.

1980 Saturday,  Fair.  Still at Hospital.  Francis Ratliffe, Joyce Brewer & Millie Brewer come.  Allso Byran Baker & Ruth come.  Janice, Wendi and Rosemary come in afternoon. 

Footnote:  She is in Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport.  Francis is her neice.  I don't know Joyce or Millie Brewer.  I think Byran Baker is related but not sure which Aunt he belongs to.  Janice and Rosemary are her daughters and Wendi is her granddaughter.


1981 Sunday.  Fair to cloudy.  Janice, Wendi & Jennings was here for lunch.  We layed around all evening.  We had fellowship supper tonite.

1980 Friday  Rainy & Windy.  Have had a very good day.  Got my goiter examined today.  Rosemary stayed with me last nite, so she went home at noon to take care of Millard.  Doug was in a minute.  Bro Zion & David Brewer come tonite.  Allso Francis Ratliffe.  Redge went home with Doug awhile. 

Footnote:  She is still in the hospital it seems.  Rosemary is her daughter and Millard is her husband.  Doug Shuler is her nephew .  Bro Zion was a preacher and I don't know David Brewer.  Francis Ratliffe is her neice.  Redge is her son who lives in Charlotte and Doug lives in Kingsport. 

1981  Saturday.  Fair  70 degrees.  Millard and I went to Campbell Slemps funeral.  I went to grocery store after, stoped at Jennings a minute.  We talked to Rosemary & Janice both today.

1980  Thursday. a nice day.  I have been disturbed since 4:30 and at 8:30 had a shower ready for surgery.  Went in about 12:30.  got back to my room about 6:00.  Redge, Rosemary, Edith & Lucille was at the hospital nearly all day.  Maude Hyatt Ely & Doug Shuler come in a minute. 

Footnote:  Redge is her son who lives in Charlotte, N.C.  Rosemary is her daughter who lives in New Mexico.  Edith (lives in Big Stone Gap) and Lucille (lives in Michigan) are her sisters.  Maude Hyatt Ely is her neighbor.  Doug Shuler is her nephew (Edith's son) who lives in Kingsport. 

1981  Friday.  Fair to cloudy.  Jennings was down.  I washed some.  The Touraine building burned at Big Stone.  We had to go stay with Wendi  this eve.  Janice worked overtime. 

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother.  The Touraine building in Big Stone was a huge old apartment building.  It was close to the Big Stone Gap schools and when I was young, I would walk there after school for piano lessons from Hallie P. Litton.  She was on the second floor and I always thought the building was creepy and it had a strong smell - like everyone was cooking something weird.   Wendi is her granddaughter who lives in Big Stone.  Janice is her daughter, Wendi's mother, who worked at the hospital.   I can't remember if people were hurt or burned in the fire but I am sure Janice would remember.  

March 26 Aunt Estelle wrote

1980  Wednesday   Fair.   We got up early and Rosemary and I left Big Stone at 8:00 o'clock for Kingsport to put me in the hospital.  Bud Culbertson came visiting tonite.  Hattie Francis called. 

Footnote:   Rosemary is her daughter who is visiting from Hobbs, New Mexico.  Kingsport is a town just over the Tenn. border where there is a large hospital.  She must be having the surgery for the growth behind her ear that she talked about a couple weeks ago.    Bud Culbertson, I believe he is the preacher that left her church a while back.  Hattie Francis Ely is her neice on her husband's side and she lives in Kingsport. 

1981  Thursday.  Fair.  Jennings and I planted potatoes, onions, cabbage, lettuce, mustard & radishes.  Gene Lipps was here nearly all evening. 

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother.  Nice garden.   Gene Lipps is a neighborhood friend.  Too bad he didn't come early enough to help plant that big garden.

1980  Tuesday   Cloudy  60 degrees.  I baked a cake and 2 pies.  Rosemary went up to spend part of the day with Janice.  Ralph and Lucille come for lunch.  Pearl, Val & Gene come this afternoon.  Jennings, Elizabeth, Radious & Walter come tonite. 

Footnote:  Rosemary is her daughter who is visiting from New Mexico.  Janice is her younger daughter.  Lucille is her sister from Michigan and Ralph is Lucille's husband.  Pearl Barkley is her cousin who lives a few miles away and Val and Gene are the people who live with Pearl and take care of her.  Jennings is her brother and Elizabeth is his wife.  Radious and Walter are her neighbors. 


1981  Wednesday   Fair  coolish.  Stell Kelly was in.  Millard & I visited Alean Reasor and Grant Morefield's this eve.  Got some fertilizer & seeds.  To prayer meeting.  Campbell Slemp died. 

Footnote:  Stell Kelly is her friend and fellow church member.  Millard is her husband.  Alean Reasor is her cousin who was married to Joe Reasor - a first cousin, I think.   They lived in Stickleyville, Va. if I remember correctly.  I remember going to visit them.   They had a couple of daughters that were about my age.   For the life of me I can't remember their names - but I can see their faces and I remember just how their house looked inside and outside.  The girls room was upstairs and it was full of beds and furniture.  The house didn't have much closet space so the girls clothes were hanging everywhere.       I think Grant Morefield was an old friend and neighbor.    Campbell Slemp - I know the name and where he lived but I don't remember much about him. 

Snowing here today and Hope is out of school so she is here with me and we have some craft projects to work on today.   She is watching a new Looney Tunes movie and sitting on the arm of the sofa writing in her journal right now.   The sofa is empty but she prefers the arm, I guess.

1980  Monday    Rain. More rain.  We washed some.  Curt, Martha, Jennings, Elizabeth, Reba, Ralph & Lucille Zubke got in.  Rosemary & I went down to Magic Mart & grocery store.

Footnote:   Curt and Martha are her relatives on her husbands side.  Jennings is her brother and Elizabeth is his wife.  Reba is her sister-in-law.  Lucille Zubke is her sister who lives in Michigan and Ralph is Lucille's husband.  Rosemary is her daughter.  Big crowd today, gotta get some cooking done.  Cause those Michigan relatives will want to eat that good Southern cooking. 

1981  Tuesday.  Fair Cold.   I washed.  Took Lillie Davis to school to get her sick son.  We picked up Janice Gail and shopped for windows for kitchen. 

Footnote:  Lillie Davis must have been a neighbor and she probably didn't drive or have a car.  Janice is her daughter who lives in Big Stone Gap. 


Back to the quilt show for the last day.  May close up early as they are calling for snow this afternoon AGAIN!!.

1980  Sunday.  Fair.  Janice and Wendi were home.  Rosemary got here about 3:00 oclock.  A.T. met her.

Footnote:  Janice is her daughter and Wendi is her granddaughter.   Rosemary is her daughter from Hobbs, New Mexico.  A.T. is Janice's husband.  I am guessing her met Rosemary at the airport. 

1981  Monday  Snow at morning. cleared up.  We went to buy some stuff to redo our kitchen.  Eat at Burger Queen.  Went out to Janice Gails awhile.  Late I walked up to Jennings. 

Footnote:  Burger Queen was a fast food restaurant and I a guessing it was in Big Stone Gap as that is where Janice Gail lives.  Jennings is her brother. 


I survived the cold yesterday at the quilt show.  It was pretty bad in the morning but with the sun it warmed up some.   Sold a few things and my quilt entry got the blue ribbon.  Back to the quilt show today and it is supposed to be tomorrow also, but we are expecting snow and they are thinking they will let us end it this afternoon.  I hope so.   Stay warm where you are.

1980  Saturday  Fair cool sunshine.  I cleaned some.  Cooked some.  Ran down to the bank when our 1st. Black Lung check came by mail.

1981 Sunday.  Rain Snow wind.  Allmost freezing.  I went to Magic Mart for our pictures and to Cas Walker's for a few things.  Later we went up to Reba's.  Janice went home this morn. 

Footnote:  Magic Mart is a store in Pennington or Dryden, not sure.  Cas Walker's is a grocery store in Pennington.  Reba is her sister-in-law.  Janice is her daughter. 


I don't know how it is where you are, but it is 17 degrees here this morning and I have to go out in it.  Coldest it has been all winter and I am going to Rising Sun, Ind. to do a quilt show - outside under a big tent that didn't have any heat last night.  They promise there will be heat in it today, if not I will pack up my toys and head home.

1980 Friday.  Rain all day.  Turned cold.  We got our black lung check $20635.20 today.  We took it to the bank.  Picked up Wendi and stayed with her until Janice come in.

1981  Saturday.  Fair beautiful weather.   Janice had a D&C this morning.  I sure worry.  We talked to Rosemary.  Jennings and I went to the Linda Moore, Larry Lewis wedding this eve.  Come back by Uncle Ray's.  Tonite I took a walk & stopped in at Sandra's. 

Footnote:  Janice is her youngest daughter.  Rosemary is her older daughter.  Jennings is her brother.  Don't know who Linda Moore is.  Uncle Ray Baker is her mother's (Lula Baker Reasor) half-brother.  He lived somewhere near Pennington Gap I think.    Sandra is her niece who lived in the neighborhood.

1980  Thursday,  Rain all day long.  I baked some pies and took one up to Jennings.  Jennings was in twice.

1981 Friday   plenty of snow on the ground.  it went away.  I got the milk & eggs.  Went to the bank to renew a certificate.  Janice is in hospital tonite. 

Footnote:  The weather in 1981 sounds about like the weather we are having in 2013.  Janice is her daughter who lives in Big Stone Gap - she works in the hospital so I'm not sure if she means she was working tonite or she is a patient.

March 13, 1974  Mrs. Liza Moore died.  She was Elsie Ely's mom. Carol Ann's grandmother.
March 13, 1975  Jack Blair had open heart surgery with 5 clogged ducts.  Son of Jake & Maebird.  Got along fine.  Died of a heart attack  1984 March 28. 
March 13, 1979  John Reasor (a son of Tip Reasor) died sudden this morn.  His wife is Mae and daughter Mary Catherine - 3 grand children.

1980 Wednesday,  Fair.  I washed two loads of clothes, dried outside.  Got the Delph boy to help dig a ditch at the barn.

1981 Thursday, snow, sunshine.    Typical March plus very cold.  We got our check and went to the bank and out to Janice Gails and back by Edith's awhile.

1980, Tuesday  Fair , reasonably warm.  I took Aunt Rosalee to grocery store this morning.  This eve we went to Nortor and fixed up the insurance.   Stopped at Edith's & Janice's. 

Footnote:   Aunt Rosalee is Rosealee Baker, married to Millard Baker who is blind and not able to drive.  They are related to Estelle.  Norton is a town about 15 miles northeast.   Edith is her sister and Janice is her daughter.  They both live in Big Stone Gap which is located between Deep Springs and Norton. 

1981  Wednesday.  Cloudy, cold snow by night.  I washed some, sewed some.  Jennings come and put up our new TV antenna.  To prayer meeting. 

Footnote:      Jennings is her brother.  Remember when we all had a TV antenna on top of the house.  A good strong wind would come along and blow the antenna out of whack and you couldn't see the TV until someone got up there and fixed the antenna.    Do those satellite dishes work the same way??     Cold and rainy here today but I have daffodils in bloom and the hyaciants (?) smell so good.

1980  Monday   Rain all day long.  We are bored to death.  Stell Kelly come in a while.  Ruth stopped when she come from work. 

Footnote:  Stell Kelly is her good friend and neighbor.  Ruth is Ruth Reasor,  Everette's wife.  Everette is Estelle's youngest brother.  They live across the road from Estelle.   Hate that she was bored.  Needed to get out those quilt pieces and start in to sewing.  That'll keep you from being bored.  She read a lot of books too, maybe she needed a new book.  Probably what she really  wanted to do was get in the car and go somewhere.    Pretty sure that Uncle Millard was not bored.  He was pretty happy at home. 


1981  Tuesday.  Fair Cold.  I washed and sewed.  Reba was in a minute.  Allso Roy Shuler.  I went for milk, came back by Jennings.

1980  Saturday.  (somehow I got on the wrong page yesterday and wrote today's info yesterday.  So this is yesterdays info.  Doesn't really matter except that I do try to keep the days in line with today.)
Fair Sunshinny, cool.  I baked a cake, washed some.  We walked up to Jennings a minute. I went to Janice Gail's and washed the car.  We went by Edith's a minute.

1981, Sunday   Fair cold. rain after nite.  Janice was home.  Mr. & Mrs. Collier's house burned last nite.  She is sad.  We rode up there a minute.  Curt & Martha were over.  Redge called tonite.

1981 Monday   Regular March weather.  I went to Pennington this eve about some of our bills.  Got groceries.  My pap test was O.K.   Went up to Jennings late.

1980, Friday  Fair, cold.   We went to Pennington and got a part fixed for the stove.  Reba was in a minute.  Mr. & Mrs. Jake  Parsons visited tonite.  


Footnote:  Pennington is a town about 9 miles west of Deep Springs.   Reba is her neighbor and sister-in-law.  Mr. and Mrs. Jake Parsons live in the neighborhood and are friends of hers. 


1981, Saturday   Fair.  A very cold wind.  Jennings & I left here at 8:30 to see my ear dr. in Kingsport at 10:00 o'clock.  He thinks my ear is O.K.  We shopped some.  Reba was with Millard when we got back.  Charles Cox had a bad heart attack last nite.  Larry Kilgore rug place burned up last nite. 

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother.  Kingsport is a town about an hour's drive from Deep Springs.  They have many special Drs. there.  Reba is Millard's sister.  Charles Cox, I think was from Dryden or Pennington.  Not sure who he was.  Or Larry Kilgore, I don't know who he was or where the rug place was.

1980, Thursday.  Cloudy to rain.  I sewed some.  Roy Shuler was in twice.  Pearl, Gene & Val come awhile.  We rode up to Jennings late.

Footnote:  Roy Shuler is married to Edith Reasor who is Estelle's sister.  They live in Big Stone Gap but have a farm on the Reasor land.    Pearl is her cousin and Gene and Val take care of pearl.  Jennings is her brother. 

1981  Friday.  Cloudy to rain.   I felt a tiny bit better today, not much.  I went for milk and a few groceries.  Jennings was in late, allso Reba. 

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother and Reba is her sister-in-law.    They all live within a mile of each other and seems they kept pretty close watch on each other.  People sure don't do that now.   We all live so far apart that we are lucky if we see each other once a week, month or year.    You'd think we could do better than that.  As we get older it seems to become much more important that we keep track of our families.  

Sorry this is so late.  I had to go to Leah's last night and stay all night.  Leah and Leslie caught a 7 AM flight to New York for the day and I had to get Max off to school.   Kenny took them to the airport at 5:30 and then he went on to work.  Max was just fine.  Leah and Leslie are shopping on Canal Street - buying purses, shoes, scarves, jewelry and sunglasses.   Some of the things are for a fund-raiser for the school that Max used to attend.   Leah has done this for years.  They will be back tonight.  I am home now as Kenny was going to be home by 3 PM when Max gets home.

1980 Wednesday.  Cloudy, windy, cold.    I washed some.  Made arrangements to go in the hospital in 2 weeks.  I went to Cas Walkers, stopped at Uncle Millard's, Mrs. White's and over to Betty Ramey's.  Picked up Millard and visited Radious & Walter.  To prayer meeting. 

Footnote:  Very busy day.  Cas Walkers is a grocery store in Pennington Gap.  Millard Baker is her uncle because he was the half-brother to her mother, Lula Baker Reasor.  Mrs. White and Betty Ramey are neighbors.  Millard is her husband.  Radious and Walter are neighbors. 

1981, Thursday.  Fair cold. 52 degrees.  I was sick all day.  Layed on the divon nearly all day.  Jennings was in. 

Footnote:  Divon is what is in the book.  Must be the sofa or davenport as they used to call it.   Jennings is her brother who lives nearby. 

March 11 Aunt Estelle wrote

1980  Tuesday.   Millard was sick this morning and I had a Dr's apointment.  I was so worried but he got better up in the morning.  Jennings & Elizabeth took me to Kingsport where I found out I have a growth behind my ear drum and due surgery.  Sure upset me. 

Footnote:  Millard is her husband.  Jennings is her brother and Elizabeth is his wife.   They live nearby.  Kingsport, Tenn. is about 45 miles southeast of Deep Springs and they have a couple of hospitals and specialists there. 

1981, Wed.   Fair cold  got up to 50 degrees.  I carried off trash and washed some.  Jennings, Radious & Walter were in.  To prayer meeting tonite. 

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother.  Radious is her cousin and Walter is her husband.  They are all neighbors.    They didn't have individual household  garbage pick-up in the community so people  had to take their trash to a location where there were big trash bins.  The garbage company picked everything up in the central location.    They were also allowed to burn the trash which a lot of people did.

March 12, 1963.  Tuesday morning  Flood in Big Stone, Pennington, Richlands, Coeburn and St. Charles, Harlan, Pineville.  Lots of places lost and stuff ruined.  100 of families out of homes.    I remember this day so well.  The Powell River, which was very close to our house in Big Stone, was in our basement.  Filled up the basement and ruined everything there.  Furnace, washer/dryer, freezer and all of Daddy's saws and toys.    It happened mostly because there was a house trailer near the river in the Cadet area and the trailer got flooded off the foundation and started floating down the river, then it got stuck sideways causing the river to back up  almost like a dam.  It was a mess for a very long time.

1980, Monday.  Fair, sunshiny 65 degrees.  Washed and dried outside.  We had company this eve.  Reba was in a while.  Jennings, Elizabeth, Radious and Walter, Grand and Noreen Morefield were here at the same time.

1981, Tuesday. Fair cold.  I worked on my quilt top.  Picked Stell Kelly & Sylvia up  tonite and went to Linda Moore's bridal tea at Pennington bank.  Jennings was in. 

Footnote:  Stell Kelly is her good friend from church and the neighborhood.  They probably grew up together as that family was in the neighborhood as long as I can remember.  Sylvia is Stell's daughter-in-law.  Stell had two sons, Harold and Bill.  Sylvia was married to Harold.    Don't know who Linda Moore was.  Pennington is a small town with a bank - about 8 miles west of Deep Springs.  Jennings is her brother.

1980  Sunday.  Bright sunshiny day.  We all dressed like it was spring for church today.  Janice & I went to the Magic Mart this evening and Curt & Martha came while we were gone. 

Footnote:  Janice is her daughter and Magic Mart is a general store - must have been magical.  Curt is her relative and Martha is Curt's wife. 

1981  Monday   Fair, cold but got to 40 degrees.  I washed.  This eve Millard & I went around to Woodrow & Henry Sturgill's.  Was up to Jennings late. 

Footnote:  Millard is her husband.  Woodrow and Henry Sturgill are neighbors that lived on the back road near her house.  Jennings lived on the same back road.  Most of the land that surrounded the back road was part of the original Reasor farm.

Jan. 2, 1981,  Uncle Millard Baker died.   Aunt Rosalee Baker died in 1989.  Both in a nursing home in Ohio.   (They had two sons, Lowell and Jack-I think- that lived in the Cincinnati area).   I would go to see Aunt Rosalee when she was here in Cincinnati.   

March 8 Aunt Estelle wrote

1980, Saturday.  60 degrees.  Rain nearly all day.  We went to Big Stone to see Wendi play basketball this morning.  eat at Long John Silvers and went out to Janice a couple of hours.  Talked to Rosemary late.  I walked up to Jennings late. 

Footnote:  Big Stone is a small town about 9 miles East of Deep Springs.  Wendi is her granddaughter.  Janice is her daughter and Wendi's mother.  Rosemary is her daughter who lives in Hobbs, New Mexico.  Jennings is her brother who lives nearby. 


1981, Sunday Fair, cold.  Janice and Wendi were home.  We rode to Magic Mart. 

Footnote:  Janice is her daughter and Wendi is her granddaughter.  I still think it is funny how that generation always said "When you coming home".  It is like we don't have any home except the one we grew up in.  My mother still says it.

March 7 Aunt Estelle wrote

1980, Friday  60 degrees .  Rain nearly all day.   I went out to Lizzie's for eggs and found them all sick on down to Virginia Shuler's.  Tonite Verlin Baker & Deborah Lawson got married at the church.  David Brewer performed with the help of Bro. Zion. 

Footnote:  Lizzie is her neighbor.  Virginia Shuler is her cousin and neighbor.  I don't know Verlin or Deborah.   David must have been the pastor at the church along with Bro. Zion. 

1981, Saturday   Fair & Cold.  Millard & I went to Magic Mart and had our pictures taken.  Jennings was in a time or two.  I sewed on my quilt pieces.  Walked over to Mrs. Orr's a minute. 

Footnote:  Millard is her husband.  Magic Mart is a general store in Dryden or Pennington (I'm not sure and I sure didn't know they could take pictures).   Jennings is her brother.  Mrs. Orr is her neighbor and friend. 

Sorry so late in posting,  I had to leave early this morning to run some errands and have lunch with some friends and then I forgot when I got back home.    

March 6, Aunt Estelle wrote

1980 Thursday  60 degrees.  Jennings come and worked on the Ribbons (?) to our antenna's to the TV.  Pearl, Val & Gene come in awhile.  Millard & I went to Pennington and got a sticker on the car, shopped a little.  Late I walked up by Ruth's and up to Jennings.  

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother.  Not sure what he was doing to the antenna.  Pearl is her cousin and Val and Gene are Pearl's caregivers.  Millard is her husband and Pennington is a small town just 7 miles  West of her house.   Ruth is her sister-in-law, who lived just across the road on a hill and her house was between Estelle's and Jennings.   

1981, Friday.  Fair cold 45 degrees.  I went for eggs, but Norma was gone and she brought then up later.  I washed & sewed nearly all day.  Jennings was in twice.  I was to Mrs. Green's a minute. 

Footnote:  Norma was her neighbor and I guess she must be getting her eggs there now.  Jennings is her brother.  Not sure who Mrs. Green was. 

Snow here last night but is melting off now.  Schools are closed so Rachel is bringing  Hope to spend the day with me.  Got lots of projects for us to do.  I went to the grocery last night so we are in for the next couple of days.  Can't   wait.    

March 5 Aunt Estelle wrote

1980 Wednesday   .  Warmer. Rained all last night and today.  I sewed some and washed Millards clothes.  We went down to Mr. and Mrs. Jake Parsons a minute for a visit.  To prayer meeting tonite. 

Footnote:  Millard is her husband.  Mr. and Mrs. Jake Parsons are old friends who live in the community.  Prayer meeting was the Wednesday night service at the church.

1981   Thursday.   Rain all day 48 degrees.  I sewed on my quilt pieces a lot.  Had to pick Wendi up at 2 o'clock.  We all come down to Edith & Roy's & visited awhile. 

Footnote:  Wendi is her granddaughter.  Edith is her sister and Roy is Edith's husband.  They all live in Big Stone Gap, about 9 miles from Deep Springs where Estelle lives. 

I was talking to Mother (Edith Shuler) yesterday and she gave me this news -Please keep in mind that she doesn't always get the story straight .   Susie Baker- I think she was a Howard-  was driving her car and Bill Roberts was in the car with her.  For some reason, Susie turned around in the middle of the road and was going the wrong way and had a  collision.  Susie has 5 bones broken in both of her arms, was in Bristol and was transferred to Knoxville and is now back in Pennington Gap where her daughter is taking care of her.  I got the impression she was in Pennington Hospital.  Bill Roberts is in Health South in Kingsport.  Doug went to see him and told Mother he was in "bad shape".  Brace on his neck with injuries to his back, neck and head.  I tried to call Doug to get the story but he didn't answer.  Bill's wife died a couple years ago and Bill has had a lady staying there with his daughter since her death.  His daughter is mentally disabled.     Just thought those of you who know these people would want to know about this terrible accident.   

March 4, Aunt Estelle wrote

1980 - Tuesday.  28 degrees up to 40.  We had Wendi.  We took Aunt Rosalee to grocery store, allso took Va. Shuler to hospital to spend time with Harold who is in the hospital.  I went to W.M.U. tonite.   

Footnote:  Wendi is her granddaughter (who got to go a lot of places).  Aunt Rosalee is the wife of Millard Baker, her mother's half-sister.  They live nearby and he is nearly blind and can't drive.  Virginia Shuler is her good friend and neighbor and cousin.  Harold is Virginia's husband.  W.M.U. is the Womens Missionary Union, a service club connected to the church. 

1981 - Wednesday.  56 degrees.  Rain all day.  Jennings ate lunch with us.  We went to the Dr. today.  He thought we were doing O.K.  To Prayer meeting tonite.

Sorry so late today.  Left early this morning with Leah to drive to Lexington to have lunch with Leslie.  She will be turning 24 on Wednesday - OMG that can't be true.    Good lunch and a little shopping.  Leslie is in her last quarter of Radiology school, finishing mid-May.  She is so excited to get to work taking x-rays.  No job yet but they are looking at where and how to apply in this last couple of months.    Could be Lexington, Northern Ky. or Cincinnati.  Plenty of hospitals around.

March 3, 1980  Monday   Minus 8 degrees this morning.  Janice brought  Wendi early.  We stayed in all day.  Jennings & Elizabeth were in awhile.  Got up to 40 degrees.  Hope the cold is going away. 


March 3,1981, Tuesday.  Fair Windy     I washed.  Went over to Mrs. Orr's this morning.  Millard and I walked all the way to Jennings.  Late I went over to Mrs. Davis.  To Missionary Society tonite. 


Footnote:  Janice is her daughter and Wendi is her granddaughter.  They live in Big Stone, about 9 miles away.  Wendi was probably out of school because of the cold weather.  That was quite a trip for Janice to make before she went to work.   Jennings is her brother and Elizabeth was his wife. 

Mrs. Orr was a neighbor that she could walk to.  I remember a Davis family, but not sure where they lived.   Missionary Society is a women's social organization that was part of the Deep Springs Missionary Baptist church.    I'm sure she was a member of that group all her life. 

March 2 Aunt Estelle wrote

1980  Sunday, March 2,  Snowed in all day.  We talked on the phone a lot.  Roy & Edith were in awhile. 


1981, Monday, March 2.  65 degrees.  I washed and cooked.  We went to visit Johnny Kelly & Reba this evening.  Edith & Roy stopped as they got back from Cincinnati. 


Footnote:  Edith is her sister who lives in Big Stone and Roy is Edith's husband.    Johnny Kelly was a neighbor and Reba is her sister-in-law and they both live in Deep Springs.    Edith and Roy (my Mother and Daddy) would drive to Cincinnati, about 6 hours away, to visit and Daddy would always do a lot of work for me around the house.  He was the handiest man I have ever known.

1980  March 1, Saturday.  20 degrees.  Sleet, snow and windy all day.  We talked on the phone all day.  Talked to Rosemary, Janice and  Redge, Sandra, Jennings, Reba, Maude & Edith. 


1981, March 1,  Sunday.      Cloudy to Fair.  Janice & Wendi were home.  The church went to rest home for services this eve.
