Clear.   A beautiful day.  We had such a sweet service this morning at church and such a nice fellowship service and singing tonite.  Janice & I went to the Cas Walker store this eve.

Footnote:    She did love her church and all the people in it.   Janice is her daughter who lives about 9 miles away.  Cas Walker store is a grocery store and was in Pennington Gap, Va.  about 7 miles West of Deep Springs.

On this date 4 years ago, our oldest first cousin, Betty Jean Reasor Gay passed away.  She was the daughter of Jennings and Elizabeth Reasor and she lived in Arkansas.   She was born Aug. 16, 1935.  She raised three children,  Becky, Allen and Bill.   She was married to Fred Gay who was a preacher all his life - and I guess he still preaches when called on.  She was such a good person and had a laugh that was contagious.   We all had a good visit with her at the family reunion and she seemed to enjoy being with us so much.  That was 6 years ago I think.

My granddaughter, Hope Nicole Klump, will be 8 years old tomorrow, Oct. 1.  She is the daughter of Dave and Rachel Klump.   They live about 15 minutes from me and I see them every chance I get.  She had a roller skating birthday party last night and they had a great time.  At that age, they are fearless.

Cloudy, rain.  Charlie & Mary Lydia brought their neighbor over and he bought our tractor and other farm machinery.   I had to go have a tire changed on the car, then we took our tractor money to the bank, and out to Janice's a minute.

Footnote:   Charlie is Charlie Ely and he and Mary Lydia lived in Rogersville, Tenn.   Charlie is a first cousin to Estelle.  I found out yesterday from my Mother, Edith,  that Charlie was the son of Cynthia Reasor Ely.  Cynthia was the sister to Pappy, Martin Reasor,  Estelle's daddy.   Stephen, if that is not right, let me know.     Janice is her daughter who lives in Big Stone Gap and that is also where their bank was I guess.    Would be interesting to know just how much the farm machinery was worth then.

Rain.   Reba picked us up at 9 o'clock and we went across Blackwater Mountain to Rogersville to visit Charlie & Mary Lydia Ely , back up to Kingsport and visited Francis Ratliffe & boys and home about 6.

Footnote:  Reba is her sister-in-law, sister to her husband, Millard Ely.   Blackwater Mountain is a mountain with a road that goes from Virginia to Tennessee.  I don't remember ever being on it but I know about where it is - about 20 miles  West of Deep Springs. Rogersville is in Tennessee.    Not a mountain in Ohio that would come close to Blackwater Mountain.  Charlie  Ely is a relative of Millard and Reba's.  I'm not sure just how they are related.   I remember going to visit them.  They lived on a farm and had two sons.  Kingsport is about 30 miles East of Rogersville.  Francis Ratliffe was raised by Reba in Olinger, Va.  She is married to Bob Ratliffe and they had three children.  She still lives in Kingsport.

Follow up on the planting of seeds:   Redge wrote, "the seeds were wheat, barley, oats.  The reason to burn a tobacco bed was to kill the weed and grass seed before sowing the tobacco seed. "    P.S. You are so smart to know all this stuff.   I know you had to do all this stuff to the fields when you were a kid at home.   Farm life was never easy - still isn't.

Clear.  We worked around the house this morn.  Then went to the garden and dug the sweet potatoes.  To prayer meeting tonite.

Footnote:  Remember a couple days ago when she said that Curt had sowed seeds on the tobacco patch.  Well I didn't know why so I asked Redge to reply and here is what he said,  "We always sowed seeds on open ground before winter or rainy weather, called a cover crop.  It helped to hold the ground together."  I'm not sure what kind of seeds, but I guess maybe it was grass seed.    I remember people burning the tobacco bed.  I am guessing the ashes made the soil richer for starting the tobacco plants.  The farmers did a lot of work just to get a crop of corn or tobacco or hay ready.   A hard way to make a $ even today  when they have to deal with the weather too.    Our grocery bills just keep getting bigger and I don't know if that is getting kicked back to the farmer, I doubt it - the grocery stores just keep showing higher profits.        I love those fresh sweet potatoes baked in the oven, just a little butter right down the middle of them.

Footnote:  Aunt Rosalee is her aunt by marriage to Millard Baker, her mother's half-brother.  Betty is the neighbor with milk cows.  Virginia Shuler is her neighbor who doesn't drive and she gets things for her when she needs them.   Millard is her husband.  Stell Kelly is her good friend and neighbor.  Seminary is a small village about 5 miles northeast of Deep Springs, about half-way between Deep Springs and Big Stone Gap.   Seminary is where my Daddy, Roy Shuler was born and raised.  He was raised on a big farm and his Daddy, Hugh Shuler, was a farmer.  Daddy Shuler (my grandfather) took his milk, eggs and whatever vegetables he had to Big Stone Gap a couple times during the week and sold them.   He also had tobacco, cows, horses and a big pig pen.

Redge, send me a comment on what you know about the tobacco patch and I will pass it on.

More information on yesterday's writing.   Redge sent a comment about the pumpkins and potatoes.    He said she didn't put the pumpkins in the building and that she put the potatoes in the potato bin.     So Redge, can you  let us know where she would put a trailer load of pumpkins.    Was the potato bin in that cinderblock building?   I remember shelves of canned goods .   Like to go in there right now and get a can of green beans to cook for supper today.        I remember Daddy Shuler had a smokehouse where he kept the hams hanging.   Did Aunt Estelle have any meat that she kept anywhere but in the freezer?

Clear.  I finished digging potatoes and washed a load of clothes.  We took the tractor & trailer and brought in the pumpkins & cushaues.  To prayer meeting tonite.

Footnote:     I wonder how many potatoes she had and how did she get them to the house.  She had a cinderblock building behind the house and I think that is where she kept the things she canned and the potatoes and apples.  The building would stay cool all year and the vegetables would keep all winter. Did she keep the pumpkins and melons in there too?     Life was much simpler then.    They had to think and make plans to have food all winter.   We don't think about any of that - we just go to the grocery and pay.     Think about what you would do today if you couldn't go to the grocery and get fresh fruit and vegetables.   It would take a lot of planning and today would be too late to get you thru this winter.

Happy Birthday to Wendi!!!

For those of you that are reading this and are related to the Reasor family, I want you to know about one of our cousins.   Stephen Reasor's wife, Anna, has a grandson that is fighting cancer.   He is 14 and in the 8th. grade at Big Stone Gap elementary school.  Currently he is in St. Jude's hospital in Memphis, Tn.  fighting Osteo-Sarcoma.  His name is Evan Rasnick. The people in Big Stone/East Stone and all the area have been doing everything they can to help support the family during this time.    When Evan was told he had cancer his comment was "God's got this".  The people in town have made t-shirts, bracelets, yard posters and all sorts of other fund-raising things with this quote on it.    Evidently he has many people at St. Jude's wearing the  bracelet.    He had surgery yesterday (Sept. 10) and they removed a tumor, so he is in ICU now recovering.  I think the cancer is in his leg .  His mother is Cindy (Anna's daughter) and his Dad is Tim Rasnick.  You can "friend" Cindy-Tim Rasnick on Facebook and see her updates.   They have been in Memphis for several months already and have a long way to go.     Stephen and Anna are also on facebook if you want to send them a message.

Footnote:  sounds like the weather in '79 is about like it is here today.   Pretty slick of her to "slip off".   I bet if they had to work in the church, she would have been there for the duration.

Yesterday, Becky Gay White posted that it was her Dad's (Fred Gay)  75th. birthday.  I did not have that info in my birthday calendar.   Happy Birthday to Freddie.    I have the  date that he and Betty Jean were married.

Footnote:   Millard is her husband.  Jennings is her brother and Branson, Opal and Cora are related to Jennings' wife Elizabeth.  I remember them but don't remember just how they are related.  I know them all lived in Flint, Michigan.  My family went to Michigan a few times on summer vacation to visit Uncle Jennings' family and Aunt Lucy's family.  I remember  we would visit Branson's family.  I think Opal is Branson's wife and Cora is some bodies sister.   I think Branson was Aunt Elizabeth's brother.  Kenneth Reasor  can straighten us out on this one.    I thought Ramey's only had milk but now it seems they have grapes too.   Sandra is her neice - Everette's daughter.  Everette is Estelle's brother.

Clear, cloudy, rain.  Our 3rd. Homecoming at the church.   Had a pile of food and several visitors.  Millard & I went to Dryden to church tonite because we didn't have church.

Footnote:    Sure would like to have some of that delicious food that those women put on those tables for the Homecoming.   Aunt Estelle made some notes in the book at the end of August and it says they had  22 cakes at this Homecoming.  You know there was every kind of cake you can imagine and each one better than the other.    I love that when her church door was not open, she found one that was.

Clear.   I worked up at the church awhile.  Lillie Davis come visiting.  Took Aunt Rosalee to grocery store and over to  Betty's for milk.  Went to the church tonite for a hour of prayer for youth revival next week.

Footnote.  Lillie Davis is Sam Davis's daughter.  Sam  lived in a renter's house on the farm and he worked on the Reasor farm.    According to my Mother who is with me here at Panera's in Kingsport.  She can fill me in on people I don't know.
