Sunday cold.
I went to see Aunt Rose in afternoon. Tonite we had a fellowship supper at the church and a visiting quartette from Norton.
Footnote: Aunt Rose is Estelle's mother's half-sister. Her name was Rose Alice Baker Slemp and she was born June 1, 1890 and died on Dec. 5, 1966. They had the same father, Ira Baker, born July 4, 1851 so he was 39 years old when Rose was born.

Janice 20th. birthday. I stayed in all day with my cold. No one came. Snowed tonite.

I don't remember when she finished her nurses training. Happy Birthday to you today. Hope you are feeling better and back to work.

I have a cold. I sewed all day. Millard & I went down to Uncle Hops tonite. Guess Aunt Rose is real sick. She is partly paralyzed.
Footnote: Millard is her husband. Uncle Hop is Hop Slemp, the husband of Rose Baker Slemp who is now very sick. Aunt Rose is the half-sister of Lula Baker Reasor, Our grandmother.
My Note: Sally Musick sent me the birthdates and dates of death of our grandmother's brothers and sisters and half-brothers and sisters. It is a long list so I will just list them as Aunt Estelle mentions them.
Uncle Hop was born Charles Hopkins "Hop" Slemp on April 22, 1886 and he died Oct. 2, 1973. Aunt Rose was born Rose Alice Baker on June 1, 1890 and she died Dec. 5, 1966. So she lived 2 years after she was real sick and partly paralyzed.
Aunt Rose was the daughter of Ira Baker(born July 4, 1851 and died Feb. 16, 1923) and his second wife, Julia Ann Wells Baker (born March 24, 1856 and died April 8, 1936.
Ira was the father of fourteen children - first one born in 1874 when he was 23 years old and his first wife Rosanna Huff Baker was born in 1856 so she was 18 years old when she started having these 7 children - 1874, 1876, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1882, 1885 and she died Sept. 25, 1886 when she was just 30 years old. Mother has told me that there was a terrible infection in the family - I think it was something called "flux". 3 children and the mother died in Sept. and Oct. 1886. Mother said some family in the neighborhood took some of the children, including Mamie Reasor away from the home and that is the reason they survived.
So Ira is left with 4 children, the oldest is 12 years old and the youngest being Mamie who was 4 years old. He found another gal same age as his wife that died and she took on the 4 children and proceeded to have 7 more with her. Her name was Julia Ann Wells Baker born March 24, 1856 and died April 8, 1936 - she lived to be 80 years old. Some interesting history - we should write a book.

My Note: Well I am back from Michigan and all the wedding festivities. It was a lovely wedding and a busy weekend. I drove all day Friday to Kalamazoo - got to the hotel about 3 PM. Meet Norma in the bar and Barry's 3 girls were there as well as some of Norma's friends. Then we walked down the street - 20 degrees - to a restaurant for the rehearsal dinner. Nice dinner - chicken very spicy - lots of wine. Saturday we walked - again very cold - to the restored factory building where the wedding and reception took place. Norma had just a few things to finish the decorating. Wedding was at 5 PM and we walked again to the building - this time is was snowing just a little, still cold. Wedding was beautiful and Laura was a glowing bride. Groom cried when she walked in - Doug and Norma walked her down the aisle and gave her away. Ceremony was not very long. Then the reception was on another floor in the same building. Live band which was very loud and the kids loved it - they danced the whole time. Food and wine were plentiful and good. Some of us went to Norma's to spend the night Sunday and Barry's girls planned a surprise birthday dinner for Barry. It was delicious and he had two cakes - here's why. Norma ordered a cake for him and left instructions for Doug to pick it up Saturday afternoon. He forgot so we had carrot cake and chocolate cake with candles. Barry was 70. It was all very good. Barry and Patty left Norma's about 8:30 Monday driving back to Texas. The girls were driving to Chicago airport to catch flights. I left about 10 and got home about 4 PM. Nice weekend and I wish some of the other relatives could have been there too. I got to see Brian's cute baby.

Maybe the Wards had a Pennington Telephone which would have meant it wouldn't cost to call the hospital. I am just guessing here. Phones were so different in 1965. Amazing how far we have come in 50 years. I can't imagine there will be major developments in the next 50 years as there has been in the last 50, but I bet there will be.

I remember going to visit Aunt Becky - they lived in a nice house on a hill with a long drive way thru a pasture field. They had a living room that had one whole wall full of books.

Sat. Rained all day
I didn't get anything done at the house. Went to Pennington with Edith and Mrs. Block in afternoon.
Footnote: Pennington is a town about 9 miles West of her house. Edith is her sister. I don't know who Mrs. Block is.
Sorry I haven't posted in a couple of days. I went to Leah's Thursday night after I taught a class in Covington. Leah had called and said Kenny's Dad - who has been in the hospital and/or nursing home for the past month - was much worse and they needed to go to the hospital. I went to stay all night so I could get Max off to school in case they didn't get back home. They went to the hospital and he was sitting up talking when they left. So I stayed with them on Friday and was just ready to come home when they got a call again that he was worse. So they left again and I stayed all night again. They came back home and Sat. morning they both left to work on their real estate deals. I took Max to the antique mall - he loves to look at old toys. I left Leah's about 5 PM and headed to Rachel's to stay with Hope while they went out with friends. Leah called about 5:30 and said that Joe, Kenny's dad, had just passed away. He sure fought a hard battle. He had 5 children and they all have children and now those children have children so it is a big family. The only grandchild that is not living in Kentucky is a priest who is studying in Washington, D.C. and he will be returning to Kentucky in May. I think that is amazing that all those kids are living right under his wing. And there are a ton of them. I went with Leah and Kenny and Max to see him on Christmas Day. He was mostly sleeping then. He had pneumonia in both lungs just before he died.
I am back home now and will try to catch up on posting.

Friday Fair warm.
I visited over to Daughtery's. Carol Bennett come awhile. Then I quilted. Took Sandra & Judy to see the ball game at Dryden.
Footnote: The Daughtery family lived very near her house. Carol Bennett is from Big Stone Gap and I have no idea what she was doing in Deep Springs. I don't remember them being friends. Sandra is her niece and lives just across the highway. I am thinking that might be Judy Reasor but I really don't know. That is the only Judy I remember. I'm sure Sandra remembers who it was. Dryden is a town about 7 miles West and it is where they all went to school. They usually had a good basketball team.
Well tonight it is going to -10 as the temperature. I am going to bed with the electric blanket and try to stay warm. My house keeps making these cracking sounds like it is going to break apart. I did go out this afternoon awhile with Rachel and Hope. They picked me up though and the car was nice and warm. We went to Panera's and had soup and bread. Stopped at the bank drive-thru and then to Kroger's pharmacy drive thru and right back home. It is supposed to get back up to the 30's next week. I am teaching a class tomorrow night at 7 PM and am hoping they cancel it. Hope has a two hour delay in the morning at the last I saw on TV. They may have to cancel school - lots of kids have to wait for the bus. Seems I don't remember ever having a delayed start - they cancelled school sometimes.

I took Mr,. & Mrs. Bull to Harlan and after Millard. Carey called tonite that their little girl had been borned. Shanna Delaine.
Footnote: Mr. and Mrs. Bull must have been good friends of hers. I don't know if they were neighbors or from the church. Harlan, Ky. is a town that is probably an hour away across Black Mountain I think. Carey Drew Jetton is married to her daughter, Rosemary and they live in Hobbs, New Mexico. I am guessing that is where Shanna was born. Happy Birthday Shanna May you have at least 50 more. Shanna lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico - I don't think that is spelled right but I looked it up on the map on my phone and that is the way it is spelled. I should ask Hope, my 10 year old granddaughter, I bet she could spell it.
Very cold here this morning -5 and the windchill is -20. I'm not going out today. Hope it is warmer where you are.

Really warm for this time of year. I went to town this morning, out to Mrs. Otey's and over to Carol Bennetts. To church tonite.
Footnote: I remember the name Otey but I don't know how she knew her. Carol Bennett is a good friend of my Mother and Daddy. I babysat for their daughter, Karen when she was a baby. Carol is married to Paul Bennett. Paul's mother, Gladys Yeary Bennett was my Daddy's first cousin. Gladys's father, Bradley Yeary was a brother to my grandmother, Emily Yeary Shuler. Paul and his father, Bill Bennett, owned a filling station in Big Stone Gap for many years. Paul and Carol eventually moved to Kingsport and they both worked for Eastman for years. Carol worked as a telephone operator when they lived in Big Stone. Paul and Carol live in a huge house in Kingsport and Paul is suffering with breathing problems and is on oxygen. Karen died - I don't know from what - several years ago. We had heard she had a problem with drugs but I don't know that for fact. Julie lives in Kingsport and works in the optical department for Walmart. They come to see Mother sometimes.
It is snowing here tonight and is about 14 degrees.

Footnote: Smith Kevin is her nephew, son of Everette and Ruth Reasor. Everette is Estelle's youngest brother. As time would tell us now, Smith Kevin ended up being the last of what I call the third generation of Reasors. Grandchildren of Lula and Martin Reasor. Smith was born Sept. 20, 1962 so he was just about 2 1/2 years old. I remember some family whose last name was Bull but I don't know anything about them. Must have been close neighbors if she walked to their house.

Footnote: Uncle Hop is Hop Slemp and he is her uncle because he is married to Rose Baker Slemp who is Mamie's half sister. They lived in a lovely house on the back road. Last time I was down the back road, the house was still standing. That was in July 2014 when I took Mother to Big Stone and we got with Janice and went to Lee County. I wonder if Hop was his full name, I never knew or if I did I sure have forgotten. Nell Reasor is not closely related - probably somewhere in the background there is some connection but I don't know what it is. She has a son, George, that Smith Kevin knows. I think Smith said George has cattle and they have done some work together regarding the cattle. Smith is an auctioneer who deals in cattle - BIG BULLS, I think.

We went to church. afternoon we went to Uncle Millards and up the back road and visited Mrs. Sturgill. Johnny and Nell and Bertha. To church tonite.
Footnote: Uncle Millard Baker is her mother's half-brother. He lived not too far from her house. The Sturgill family was huge and a lot of them lived on the back road near her.
My Note: Speaking of Uncle Millard Baker, his son, Lowell Baker who lives here in Cincinnati not too far from me, called me tonite. He said that he had a call from Susie Baker and she let him know that Bill Roberts has passed away. After Bill's wife passed away, Bill and Susie had renewed their friendship (I believe they were high-school friends). Bill had lung cancer and had been sick for a couple of years. He and Susie had a car wreck a couple of years ago and that is when his lung cancer was discovered when he was in the hospital with injuries suffered in the wreck. His wife died a few years ago of cancer also. Bill has a daughter who is now in her late 40's and is mentally retarded. Doug said Bill was certainly worried about what would happen to his daughter. Surely he made some plans for her safe keeping.
Bill's younger brother, Jim Roberts lives in Las Vegas.
A few years back, I was home at Christmas and I went with Linda, Doug and Mother to visit Bill and his wife and their daughter. Linda has cut their hair for years and Missy called Linda by name (something that was rare for her). So they would always take her a Christmas present and go to see her Christmas trees - there was one in every room. Jim Roberts was visiting them that year so I got to see him too.

I took him to see Aunt Rosalee Baker in the nursing home and Uncle Millard Baker at his home. They lived about 10 minutes from my house then.
My Note: I have had computer problems so was not able to post my blog for the last couple of days. I will catch up. We are very cold here - hope you all are staying warm where you are.
