December 15, 1981 Aunt Estelle wrote

Tues.  1981  Snow,.  nearly all day

Lizzie, Maudie Ellen and Bro Zion was in this morning.  Millard got a lot of birthday cards. Maude & Reba were in.

Footnote:   Lizzie Sturgill is a neighbor and Maudie Ellen is Lizzie's daughter.  Bro Zion is the preacher at her church (I think).   Millard is her husband.  He was born on December 15, 1903.  So in  1981  he would have been celebrating his 78th. birthday.   He died on Dec. 21, 1983 when he was just 80 years old.   Maude is a friend of hers and Reba is her sister-in-law.  I remember Maude as Maude Hyatt but I think her husband Paul Hyatt died before she did and she remarried.  I can't remember just who she married.  I don't remember that Maude ever had any children.  They owned a filling station/grocery store.  I loved when Daddy would stop there and I could get a fudgesicle or a brown mule.  The filling station just had one gas pump that I remember.  Now you never see that.  Of course there are very few family owned businesses of any kind now.  Back then that is all they were, was small family owned stores.  And sometimes you didn't have to pay the bill - you could say charge it and then you would pay the next time you stopped in - boy, try that now!!!
