April 18, 1980 Aunt Estelle wrote

Friday, 1980  Fair nice.  Jennings & I went to Kingsport,  we shopped some and eat at Kings table.  Saw Dr. Cowden at 2.  He thinks my ear is O.K. and wants me back in 6 weeks.  Millard & I went to Penn. late  back by the cemetary to see our tombstones and stoped at Don & Jessee Myers.  Got our living room furniture back today.

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother.  Kingsport is a town about 45 miles southeast.  Millard is her husband.  I don't know Don and Jessee Myers.  Must be neighbors.    What a day - lots to do.

My note:   I am still in Kingsport with Mother.  It is Sunday morning, April 21.   She is taking a nap.  So I took the opportunity to get to Paneras.   We have had an interesting couple of days.  Thursday we drove to Big Stone and on down to Lee County.  Took the back road to Olinger thru Seminary.  I was looking for and found  the Slemp cemetary and found the tombstone for my great-grandfather - John T. Shuler.  Born 1869 and died 1949.   Mother had told me the story that he was buried in the  Slemp cemetary but they wouldn't let his wife - Cora Shuler (Little Granny) be buried there.  Changed the rules and said no more "outsiders".    It is the cemetary where Campbell Bascom Slemp is buried.  He was a Congressman and big shot it seems.   So I haven't found out where Little Granny is buried.   Uncle Don will know.    Then we drove the back road and came out East of Pennington Gap.  Stopped at Stephen and Anna's for a short visit and Mother started complaining with her foot hurting so bad.  We had a quick Chinese supper with Janice in Big Stone and I drove 75-80 miles @ hr. to get to Kingsport.  Took Mother right to emergency room and after x-rays, she has 2 broken bones in her left foot.  She has a boot on for 4 weeks.   She is doing OK.  Sleeping good and not much pain now.  I will be here a while longer.
