Tuesday,  cloudy wet. cool 1980   We went to the Dr., got the car tags fixed up, got groceries.  I walked up to Jennings late.  I hit our black cat with the car when we started out.

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother who lives nearby.  Oh,  sounds like she just left after she hit the cat, hope it wasn't hurt.

My note:   I stopped at Leah's house on my way home last night.  She lives in Northern Ky. so it is kinda on my way.  Then I can take the ferry across the river.   Everyone there is OK.  Max loves to go to yard sales and they had been to a "community sale" on Sat. so he was excited about that and had to show me all the things he found.  He saves his money - quarters- just for yard shopping.  Leslie was home for the weekend and she is very nervous - she graduates on May 10 and is scheduled to take her radiology boards on Mon, May 13.    Amanda (Kenny's daughter) is planning her wedding - Oct. 19.  She was working on centerpieces for the tables and Leah and Leslie had been shopping and ordered their dresses.  Leslie is in the wedding and Leah is step-mother of the bride.  I have to get a dress ??? too.  Mine may be a pants suit.   I will have dinner with Rachel, Dave and Hope tonight at our favorite Thai restaurant.  Hope loves the rice and Dave loves the sushi.  Rachel and I share the cashew nut chicken.     Lots to do here to get ready to go to Cleveland for classes.

Saturday,  Rainy.  I sewed some, swept the floors.  We rode down to Grant Morefields, stoped at a yard sale, come by Uncle Ray Bakers home and up to Jennings.

Footnote:  Grant Morefield was a neighbor.  Uncle Ray Baker was her mother's half-brother.  He lived a few miles away.   Jennings is her brother.

My note:    I am back in Cincinnati tonight.  Mother's foot got worse and we went to her Dr. on Thursday.  She has an infection in the foot so he put her on an anitbiotic.  He also took that big boot off her and ordered her a shoe with two velcro straps.  Life got a lot easier after that.  The swelling went down and she was able to walk better and manage the shoe easier.   She so wants to stay in her house but she really doesn't want to be alone.  She won't even talk about coming home with me.  She does get lonely but she has friends who visit and call.  She would love to talk to any of you.  She looks forward to Janice's visits.  Thanks Janice for all you do for her.    I have to drive to Cleveland on Thursday for 3 days of classes.  So I had to get home to get all the things prepared for that.   I will try to catch up on the blog dates and then stay current.   I had to go to Panera's to get on the computer and Panera's limits access to 30 minutes.   So I had to write fast and I couldn't go everyday.

Monday  1980  Beautiful day.  We attended Lizzie Slemp Wells funeral at Penn.  She was Elbert Slemps sister.  Went to Big Stone and paid for our tombstones.  Got some tomato plants and set them out.

Footnote:  I'm not sure who Elbert Slemp - I have heard his name but don't know if he is related or a neighbor.   Big Stone Gap is a small town about 9 miles away.

I love that they paid for tombstones and got tomato plants all at the same time.  One signifying the end and one showing a new beginning.  She was very practical.

We tried to find the place where Reba's  store was in Olinger but just couldn't place it.  We were on every dead-end road there.  Lots of people living there now.     The flowers were beautiful and the trees so pretty with their Spring green colors.    For the Ely's reading this, there is a street sign there that says "Ely town".   I took a picture and when I have time to put it on here, I will show you.    THere is also a Reasor Road.

Friday, 1980  Fair nice.  Jennings & I went to Kingsport,  we shopped some and eat at Kings table.  Saw Dr. Cowden at 2.  He thinks my ear is O.K. and wants me back in 6 weeks.  Millard & I went to Penn. late  back by the cemetary to see our tombstones and stoped at Don & Jessee Myers.  Got our living room furniture back today.

Footnote:  Jennings is her brother.  Kingsport is a town about 45 miles southeast.  Millard is her husband.  I don't know Don and Jessee Myers.  Must be neighbors.    What a day - lots to do.

My note:   I am still in Kingsport with Mother.  It is Sunday morning, April 21.   She is taking a nap.  So I took the opportunity to get to Paneras.   We have had an interesting couple of days.  Thursday we drove to Big Stone and on down to Lee County.  Took the back road to Olinger thru Seminary.  I was looking for and found  the Slemp cemetary and found the tombstone for my great-grandfather - John T. Shuler.  Born 1869 and died 1949.   Mother had told me the story that he was buried in the  Slemp cemetary but they wouldn't let his wife - Cora Shuler (Little Granny) be buried there.  Changed the rules and said no more "outsiders".    It is the cemetary where Campbell Bascom Slemp is buried.  He was a Congressman and big shot it seems.   So I haven't found out where Little Granny is buried.   Uncle Don will know.    Then we drove the back road and came out East of Pennington Gap.  Stopped at Stephen and Anna's for a short visit and Mother started complaining with her foot hurting so bad.  We had a quick Chinese supper with Janice in Big Stone and I drove 75-80 miles @ hr. to get to Kingsport.  Took Mother right to emergency room and after x-rays, she has 2 broken bones in her left foot.  She has a boot on for 4 weeks.   She is doing OK.  Sleeping good and not much pain now.  I will be here a while longer.

That is so sad, I have very fond memories of Uncle Everette.  He was such a kind, gentle man.  I never knew that Aunt Estelle was the last person to see him alive.  When I was a kid at home, Mother would fix a big lunch - mostly soup beans, cornbread and fried potatoes and Uncle Everette would walk with Daddy from the Pet Dairy and eat lunch.  They called it dinner then but it was about noon.  When I was old enough, Mother would let me make the cornbread and Uncle Everette would always say it was the best cornbread he had ever had.    I never heard an angry word from him or ever saw him seem even unhappy.   We all still miss him very much.    He was a wonderful man taken too soon.
