July 31, 1979, Tuesday Aunt Estelle wrote

Clear, cloudy, rain.  Fog early, a little shower thru the day.  Wendi & I took Aunt Rosalee to the store this morning and to Pennington this evening.  I shampooed the rugs after Wendi went home. 



Footnote by Pat:   Wendi is her well-travelled granddaughter.  Aunt Rosalee is the wife of Millard Baker and he is the half-brother of Lula Baker Reasor, Estelle's mother.    Pennington is   the town West of Deep Springs about 8 miles. 

In the book I have, there is a "Special Data" page at the end of each month.  This is what she wrote at the end of July:     Aug. 1, 1979. Elmer Bowling announced he was quitting our church.  Sure hurts me.  They joined at Dryden.  Wish them lots of luck. 

the next entry reads:    Aug. 7, 1979.  Rosemary, Greg & Shanna came.  Also Redge, Jennifer & Leisha all was there Tues. nite, Wed nite, Thurs nite and Redge's family left. 

Footnote on Special Data:     Elmer Bowling was a neighbor and fellow church member.  She loved her church and was upset by any disagreements.  Dryden is a small town 5 miles West of Deep Springs.  Dryden is where the school was and I guess there were churches there too.     
Rosemary is her daughter who lives in Hobbs, New Mexico and always came once a year at least to visit.  Greg and Shauna are Rosemary's children and Estelle's grandchildren.  Redge is her son who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Jennifer and Leisha are his children and Estelle's grandchildren.

Clear, cloudy, rain.  Showers.  Foggy this morn to clear to cloudy & showers.  We have Wendi and she and I went for milk, up by Virginias, Richard Danner's & Lizzie's.  Reba was here awhile.  Went to the garden late. 



Footnote by Pat:     Well the weather must have been a mess this day.  Wendi is her granddaughter who got to go a lot of places.   Virginia is Virginia Shuler, her cousin, who didn't drive and lived on the "back road" - kinda isolated.   She was good to visit Virginia.  They were both avid readers and they shared books - putting their initials in the book after they had read it.    Richard Danner and Lizzie are neighbors who also lived on the "back road".    Reba is her sister-in-law .    I know that garden had a lot of good produce in it by now - tomatoes, beans, corn  and other things.

Clear.   Hot.  We had a visiting preacher today a Mr. Hallmark and we did like him. Janice & Wendi were home.  We went to the Magic Mart.  Had fellowship supper tonite.  Didn't have such a big crowd but sure had a good supper and enjoyed the supper.  Edith & Roy stopped.  They had taken Leah & Rachel home thru the weekend. 


Footnote by Pat:    Never heard of Mr. Hallmark, he must have been "visiting".   Janice is her daughter and Wendi is her granddaughter.   Magic Mart is a variety store near Pennington Gap, Va., about 8 miles West of Deep Springs.   Wouldn't you like to have one of those suppers to go to tonight?  They had the best desserts.    Edith is her younger sister and Roy is her  brother-in-law who live in Big Stone Gap.   Leah and Rachel are the granddaughters of Edith & Roy.   Leah and Rachel are my daughters and we live in Cincinnati.  During summer vacation, I would take the girls to visit my Mother and Daddy and the girls would stay with them for a couple weeks.  The girls were 10 & 8 years old in 1979.  Daddy would always do work around my house when they came to visit.   Leah & Rachel remember going to Aunt Estelles' house and drinking milk.  They loved that raw milk.

Clear, cloudy.  Janice called and asked me to go to Norton with her and I did.  Nearly burned up.  Raining tonite. 



Footnote by Pat:    Janice is her daughter who lives in Big Stone Gap - about 9 miles East.  Norton is a town about 10 miles Northeast from Big Stone Gap.  Norton had Cohen's Department store and a lot of other stores that were different from the stores in Big Stone and Appalachia.  You had to travel thru Appalachia to get to Norton.    The first job I ever had was in Norton at Time Finance Co.   That is where I meet Ron Statzer, he was working for the radio station WLSD in Big Stone Gap and came to Time Finance to sell them commercial time.     I bought my going-away wedding clothes at Cohen's.     Estelle's neice, Sandra Reasor Hunt lives and works at the Hospital in Norton.

Clear, cloudy.  Didn't rain until night again.  Jennings was in.  I went to the garden and got some vegetables.  Got stung by a wasp on the arm. 



Footnote by Pat:     Jennings is her brother.  She always had a nice garden full of good vegetables.  I'm sure the wasp sting put her down for awhile - but not for long.

Rained all day.  I studied my S.S. lesson early this morn.  Didn't do much of anything.  Jennifer & Leisha and cousins come down awhile.  Radious & Walter were in tonite.   Was up to Jennings a minute.

Cloudy, rain.   I made some pies for Jennings bunch.  Millard & I went up to Radious awhile this evening and tonite to Pennington funeral home where Millard's Aunt Maggie Ely lay corpse. 



Footnote by Pat:   Jennings is her brother who lives up the road.  Millard is her husband.  Radious is a cousin who lives nearby.  Pennington is a town located about 8 miles West of Deep Springs.  There is a hospital, several banks, filling stations, department stores, grocery stores and funeral home.   I remember the name Maggie Ely but not sure how she is related to Millard.    Must be his father's sister or she married an Ely.

Clear.    Redge left for home this morning.  I took Aunt Rosalee to grocery store and washed two loads of clothes when I got back.  Got Lillie to mow the yard this eve.  Tonite I went to Funeral home at Big Stone where Glenn Slemp (Glenna's dad) lay corpse.  Stoped over by Scalf's house and visited the girls & Carl & Beulah and  Bruce &  wife. 



Footnote by Pat:  Redge is her son who lives in Charlotte, N.C.   Aunt Rosalee is  married to Uncle Millard Baker, her mother's half-brother.  They live close-by.   Don't know who Lillie is.   Glenn Slemp was a friend, not sure if he was related.  Scalf's is the family of Redge's in-laws.  They lived in Big Stone Gap.  Carl & Beulah and Bruce & wife are Redge's in-laws.   Mrs. Scalf had passed away and they were all there for the funeral.  I don't know where they all live.  

July 25, Wednesday, my grandson, Max Kordenbrock will be 15 years old.  He has invited his boyfriends to a party at Dave & Buster's.  When I told him I was coming, he said, "Nana, don't embarass me".   I said I wouldn't give him any hugs, just coming to bring presents.  So then he was OK with that.      Also, July 25 is the day that Margaret Zubke died.  Margaret was married for many years to Barry and they had three daughters.  Barry still lives near Houston, Texas.

Clear, rain.   I fixed dinner for Jennings, Elizabeth, Fred, BettyJean, Becky, Allen & Billy and Redge today.  Jennifer & Leisha and Hershel's girls come this eve and stayed a few hours.  Redge stayed all nite.  Smith was out.

Cloudy.   Janice & Wendi was home.  We all went to Mrs. Scalf's funeral.  Later we went up to Jennings awhile.  Edith brought watermelon.  Freddie Gay preached for us, as they are here for vacation.

Rain.  I cooked some.  Hoped Redge would come, but he didn't.  We went up to the bank opening, out to Janice a minute & back by funeral home.  Mrs. Scalf died at 2 Friday morning.     Late Betty Jean & family come in and later I went to the Magic Mart & Cas Walkers.  Lizzie, Maudie Ellen & Jessica were out late.

Rain.   Started raining before daylight.  Wendi & I went to Cas Walker and over to Betty's for milk.  Smith Kevin was out awhile.  Fred, Betty Jean, Becky, Allen & Bill Gay got to Jennings by early evening. 



Footnote by Pat:    Wendi is her granddaughter.  Cas Walker is a grocery store.  Betty is a neighbor with a lot of cows.  Smith Kevin Reasor is her nephew, the youngest son of her youngest brother, Everette.  He lives in the neighborhood.  Fred is the husband of Betty Jean who is the daughter of Jennings and Elizabeth Reasor.  Becky, Allen and Bill are Fred and Betty Jean Gay's children.  They live in Arkansas.  Fred is a preacher.  They would come once a year to visit and stay about a week.

 Betty Jean was born Aug. 16, 1935 and died Sept. 30, 2008.  She married Fred Gay on July 7, 1956.  Betty Jean was the first grandchild born to Lula and Martin Reasor.  Becky was born Aug. 31, 1957 and she was the first great-grandchild born to Lula and Martin Reasor.   Allen Gay was born Aug. 20, 1968 and was adopted by Fred and Betty Jean ( I don't know how old he was when they adopted him).    Bill Gay was born Jan 5, 1973.

Cloudy.   I washed rugs.  Mowed the lawn some.  Wendi slept all morning.  Pearl and the Lipps folks were here.  Roy was here late.  I went to the garden for beans after Wendi went home.



Footnote by Pat:   Wendi is her granddaughter.   I think Pearl is Pearl Barkley and she is her cousin.  Not sure who the Lipps are.  Roy is her brother-in-law, married to her sister Edith.   I know she cooked those beans so good.  Like to have some right now.

Clear, not quite so hot.  Wendi went back to sleep and Millard went up to Jennings and I made beet pickles & canned apples this morn.  Curt come awhile.  I was out to Lizzie's a minute & by Jennings.  To prayer meeting tonite.

I am leaving Norma's today - it has been hot hot here.  Will be back home this evening.  Had a nice long visit with her and Doug and the new puppy, Luca.   Barry and Patty, from Houston,  were here also so we all had such a nice visit.  Busy,  but we found time to eat very well and drink even better.  Laura and Brian & Lindsey also came to visit.  Also Norma's friend from high school, Jennie, came for a couple nights.  I know Norma and Doug will be sad and glad when we all leave.  Barry is leaving today also.

Clear, hot.  Wendi & I took Aunt Rosalee for groceries.    Then over by Ramey's for milk, up by Virginia Shuler's with milk.  Late this eve I worked a little in the garden.  Got a few beets to can.  Radious & Walter come late.

Clear  85 degrees      We had Wendi.  We had a pretty day.  I picked up and canned 5 quarts of apples.  We had a dr. appointment at 3:00 oclock.  I had a pap test and other exams.   Went up to Jennings late.

Today is my Mother's 93rd. birthday.  Hope she has a good day.  She said she has received lots of cards which she loves.     Jennifer Ely Collins celebrated a  birthday on Sat., July 14.  Hope she had a good day too.

Cloudy, rain, real hot.  Janice & Wendi home for lunch and church.  We went to Magic Mart and had a big rain while we were there.

Clear Cloudy Rain.    I picked up apples. Canned 2 cans.   Swept the house & cooked some.  About 4 this afternoon we went to Mrs. White's and over to Uncle Ray Baker's for a visit.

I am at Norma's house in Michigan and having a great time.  She had a nice party with lots of people and they carried off a number of dolls.   Food and drink both so good.  I'm off to St. Joseph this morning to open the booth and hope a lot of people come and carry off some more of the dolls.

Clear, cloudy, rain.     I canned apples.  Curt  & Jennings were here awhile.  Wendi & I went for milk and down to Cas Walker store, up by Virginia Shuler's & Lizzie's.  Late I went and picked beans.  Richard Damer, Don Haskins & Sue, Jake & Liza Parsons were all in late.

I am driving today to Coloma, Michigan and will be spending the next week with Norma & Doug and the new puppy.  Barry and his wife are there already.    Norma is having a party tonight for her neighbor friends and I will be showing some of my dolls.  They usually buy cards and dolls and whatever else I put out.   Then tomorrow, Fri.  Norma helps me set up my tent in St. Joseph, Mich.and I am in a show Sat. & Sun.  Hope it is not tooo HOT.   I will try to post everyday, but if I don't get time, I will catch up later.

A nice cloudy day but finally cleared.  Wendi & I took Aunt Rosalee to grocery store.  We stopped at Va. Shuler's.  Late this eve I went to the apple tree over to Lillie Davis and late up to Jennings. 



Footnote by Pat:     Sorry I didn't write this morning, had too many other things going on.   Wendi is her granddaughter (who gets to go a lot of places).  Aunt Rosalee is married to Uncle Millard, a half-brother to Estelle.  Va. Shuler is Virginia Shuler and she lives near Aunt Rosalee so it was on her way home.  Virginia is also related as her mother and Estelle's mother were sisters or half-sisters - I hear that stuff about the half brothers and sisters told different  ways.  Need to talk to Stephen Reasor, our geneologists, to get the story straight.     Lillie Davis was a neighbor.  Jennings is her oldest brother.     
Wendi sent a comment stating that she was probably playing Connect Four with her granddaddy (Millard).  It was her favorite game she said.   Wendi was born Sept. 11, 1973, according to my records,  so she was 5 years old - almost 6 during this summer.

Rain, cool rain all day long.  I went up to Jennings early.  Then sewed some.  Wendi & Millard played games nearly all day.  Curt was here awhile. 



Footnote by Pat:    Jennings is her brother who lives within walking distance.  Wendi is her granddaughter and Millard is her husband (Wendi's grandfather).   Curt is her brother-in-law.  When she talks about sewing, she was usually making herself a dress or she was making a quilt.

Cloudy.  Wendi wanted a picnic.  So we went to Penn. and about 1 1/2 hrs it rained enough to run us in.  We had Mr. Roark to preach for us this weekend.  I enjoyed him.

Cloudy, coolish.  All the kids called today.  Curtis was down this eve and ate supper.  We all went to Dryden tonite to celebrate Jake & Liza Parson's 55 wedding anniversary. 


Footnote by Pat:     All the kids are:  Redge who lives in Charlotte, N.C. ,  Rosemary who lives in Hobbs, N.M.  and Janice who lives in Big Stone Gap, VA.      Curtis is her brother-in-law.  Dryden is a small town about 6 miles west.  The school was in Dryden and all the kids in Deep Springs rode the bus to school in Dryden.  When I had a day off at my school in Big Stone, I would go to Aunt Estelles and spend the night and ride the bus to Dryden school with the kids and go to classes with Rosemary.  I loved going to that school.  Also they had Saturday  night  parties in the gym and I remember the "cake walks" and square dancing.      Jake and Liza Parsons were long time neighbors of hers.  Wonder where they had that celebration?

Clear.   So cold we had heat awhile this morn.  Wendi & I went to Penn.  I got a Senior Citizen card and we went to the new bank opening.  Stopped at the Cas Walker stores.  Canned some apples this eve.  Was up to Jennings a while. 



Footnote by Pat:   so cold in 1979 but in 2012 it is 99 degrees in Cincinnati - new record yesterday and will be another one today.  Wendi is her granddaughter and Penn is Pennington Gap, a small town about 8 miles west.  Cas Walker is a famous citizen of the area and he had grocery stores.  Jennings is her oldest brother.  I just found a list of birthdates and Jennings was born March 16, 1909.  He was the first child born to Martin and Lula Baker Reasor.  Her father, Martin (Pappy) was born May 4, 1882 and her mother, Lula Baker (Mamie) was born July 7, 1883.    They were married in June of 1907. 

  The last surviving child of Martin and Lula is Edith Reasor Shuler, my mother.  She will be celebrating her 93rd. birthday on July 16.  She is still living in her home alone, paying her bills, cooking and in charge of her own medicine.   Sharp as a tack, reads novels all day, loves Amish stories, works puzzles and watches Jeopardy.  She walks to the mailbox everyday and loves to get cards, letters and phone calls.    So all you cousins out there, this is probably your oldest living relative , send her a little love -  she will love it.    909 Edgewood  Circle     Kingsport, TN 37663       423-239-4652    

I see also on this list of birthdates that Jennifer Ely Collins has a birthday on July 14 (she is Estelle's oldest granddaughter) .   Also, Kimberly Zubke had a birthday July 3- Barry Zubke's daughter and Barry is Lucille's son.  Lucille is Estelle's sister.   Brian Somers  birthday is July 8.  Brian is Norma Zubke Somers' son and Norma is Lucille's daughter.      (I think this looks like something you would read in a column in the Big Stone Gap Post)    Enjoy!!!!

Clear.     Wendi was sick and had to go to the Dr. before coming down.  She has a virus.  I went to garden later for beans, canned apples early today.  Pearl, Val & Gene were here awhile.  was up to Jennings.

Cloudy, rain.   We went to Janices for lunch.  Janice, Wendi & I rode to Appalachia & back.   Curt ate supper with us.  To Prayer meeting tonite.  Poured rain late today. 


Footnote by Pat:    Janice is her youngest daughter.  Wendi is her granddaughter.  Appalachia is a small town about 2 miles north of Big Stone Gap where Janice and Wendi live.   I grew up in Big Stone Gap and Appalachia was our biggest sports rival.   Fifty years later, the two towns took care of that problem as now the two schools have merged into one.   Seems to be working OK.   In  1959 the Big Stone  Gap school merged with East Stone Gap school and we were renamed Powell Valley High School.    Took a couple of years for that to work itself out.  I was in that first graduation class from Powell Valley = class of '60.   And now 50 years later the new combined school is called Union High School and instead of the Vikings they are now the Bears.  All seems so strange.      Curt is her brother-in-law.    Happy 4th to all of you.  Stay cool.

Clear     We had Wendi.  I canned a few apples.  She & I went up to visit Mrs. McCullom.  Then down to Ramey's for milk, up by Va. Shuler's, Lizzie Sturgills.   Jennings & Elizabeth come and we rode down to Burgher hut for ice cream.  To W.M.U. tonite. 


Footnote by Pat:   Wendi is her granddaughter.  I don't know who Mrs. McCullom is.  Ramey is a neighbor with a lot of cows as she is always going there to get milk.  Virginia Shuler is a cousin and neighbor.  Lizzie Sturgill is a neighbor who lives on the same back road as Virginia Shuler.  Jennings and Elizabeth also live on the same back road.  Jennings is her older brother and Elizabeth is his wife.   Jennings went to Flint, Michigan when he got our of school and worked for Chevrolet.  He retired and came back to Deep Springs to live.  They lived in a nice trailer that he put on the farm that he grew up on.  They lived the rest of their lives there and seemed so happy.

Clear.   We have Wendi.  I washed some then planted beans & corn in the garden.  Wendi & I sat out in shade and read a lot this eve.  Picked up the apples late.

Clear   still cool.  I wore a shawl to church.  Janice & Wendi was home.  Edith, Roy, Doug and all the children come by awhile.  Reba & Curt come awhile after church. 



Footnote by Pat:    Janice and Wendi are her daughter and granddaughter.  Edith is her youngest sister and Roy is her husband.  Doug is Edith & Roy's son. Doug has two children,  Travis and Lori and I think my two daughters, Leah and Rachel, were probably with them.   My children would spend some time with their grandparents, Edith & Roy, during the summer.   Reba is her sister-in-law and Curt is her brother-in-law.
