I know lots of things are going on health wise with our family but it all seems to be under control either by the Doctor or Hospital. Tough getting old. I am now a great grandmother. Leslie had a sweet baby boy, Lane Michael Davis, on Dec. 8. They are home and doing fine. I am going to babysit this afternoon while they get some shopping done. Goody for me. We had our annual cookie bake at Leah's new kitchen Saturday and it was a mess. I made fudge - with walnuts and without and glazed pecans. The girls made a huge number of cookies of all kinds. And buckeyes. of course none of us need any of that but the fun is in the mess. I hope each of you have a wonderful holiday filled with good food, family and friends.

My note: I am getting ready for my last two shows this year, so I am pretty busy. I saw on facebook that Carey Drew, Rosemary's husband, has had knee surgery again. He is in Odessa, Texas and that is a 90 minute drive from Hobbs. So Rosemary, I am thinking about you as you make that drive and am hoping you get him back home soon. Also saw on social media that Freddie Gay fell and has broken 3 ribs. He is the husband of Betty Jean and the father of Becky . We are keeping him in our thoughts also. Talked to my mother, Edith Shuler, and she is doing just fine. Having trouble sleeping at night she says and I'm sure it is because she sleeps a lot during the day. My granddaughter, Leslie, will deliver her baby boy by C-section on Dec. 8 if not before. She is a diabetic and has gained a lot of weight. She is a small boned body and Dr. says the baby is too big for her to deliver. Keep her in your thoughts as we go thru this risky time. I hear that Janice is going to Wendy's condo in Florida and is cooking Thanksgiving dinner. Wish I could be there with them. According to Mother, Kenneth and Jeananne may join them. Kenneth and Jeananne stopped to see Mother on their way to Florida - where they spend the winter. Seems they are not too far away from where Janice will be. I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving and will be with all those you love.

Patricia Shuler Statzer come to see me. Ruth & Smith were in too.
Footnote: Well that is me, I loved to visit her and did every chance I got. I must have been home visiting and stopped to see her on my way back to Richmond, Ky. I think that is where I was living then. We moved there in the fall of 1965 so Ron could go to Eastern Kentucky State full time and I could work full time. What a deal. He went to school all week and worked at a radio station on the weekends and I worked for the State as a social worker all week and went to college on Saturday. That only lasted a year when he was offered a full time newsman position at a big radio station in Louisville. So we packed that mobile home again and moved it to Louisville. (we bought the mobile home when we got married and parked it behind the radio station in Whitesburg, Ky. in 1963.) We packed it up and had it moved to Richmond and then again to Louisville. We eventually sold it - the monthly payments were $65.00. A newsman that Ron worked with in Louisville got a job in St. Louis and wanted to get rid of his house so we gave him $1000.00 and took over the payments on a cute 3 bedroom house in Louisville. I loved that house and cried all the way to the lawyers office when we had to sell it. We were moving to Cincinnati for yet another newsman job at an even bigger radio station. Oh I could go on and on.

So hopefully I can get back on schedule. Also my computer is so slow that sometimes I don't have the patience to wait for it to get going. I have two more shows for sure and one I am waiting to hear from. So I still have lots of work waiting to be done. Not sure how many I am going to do next year as it is getting harder and harder to put that tent up by myself. Maybe I will just do indoor shows. I do love the outdoor shows though. We will see how it goes.

My Note: I think that most of you who read this now know that Sandra had surgery this morning (Monday, Oct. 12) at Holston Valley in Kingsport. Josh reported on email that she came thru fine and they would get a report from the Dr. later today. She is supposed to go home tomorrow ( not quite the hospital stay that Aunt Estelle had in 1965). They don't keep you around now.
I talked to Mother and Janice had called her and given her an update on Sandra. Thanks to Janice, she picked up Mother yesterday (Sunday) and took her to the Mall in Kingsport to see the movie "Big Stone Gap". She said she enjoyed it and could see a lot of houses and places she knew. I don't think it is showing anywhere here so I have to wait till I can get it from the library.
I am headed to Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Thurs. to do a show this weekend. I almost cancelled but decided I am able to do it one more time. This may be the last though. The show cost $350.00 which I have already paid and there is no refund, so that heloed with the decision too. So I'll post again when I get back next week.

Footnote: Edith is her sister, Patricia and Doug are Edith's children and Ron and Linda are her children's spouses.
My Note: I have been unable to write on the computer due to my recent neck injury. Last week I had pain in my neck and the pain got severe very fast. It felt like something pinching in my back and radiated to my neck and down my left arm. By Monday (labor day) I was in tears so Leah came and took me to the emergency room. They checked me thoroughly and took xrays of my neck and found I have two worn out disc in my neck. Oh dear I guess I have been sewing too many hours at a time and now paying for it. I'm taking predisone (spelling) and a pain killer. Hopefully the inflamination will disappear and the pain will go away. I am still in pain but getting less every day. I will have to see an orthopedic eventually to see if I can do exercise, therapy or surgery. So I will try to keep up with the blog as the pain subsides.

Millard & I rode over to Pennington to visit Jeff Ward at the hospital. Janice & Sam were home for dinner. To church.
Footnote: Millard is her husband. I think Jeff Ward was a neighbor. We know Janice & Sam.
My Note: I am posting ahead for two reasons. My computer has been acting up so I thought while it is working so good, I would just post a few more days. And I am going to Leah's to stay with Max while Leah and Kenny go camping with Kenny's big family. Max doesn't like to go if there is no Wi-Fi and it is too hot. He would rather stay home and I don't want him by himself - even though he would probably be fine. I have to take Hope to her volleyball game Friday and then we will go to Leah's. Rachel and Dave are taking some friends out on the river on the boat and Hope doesn't want to go. There is a big concert venue "Riverbend" and it is on the banks of the river, so Friday night Dirks Bentley is in concert and lots of people sit in their boats and listen to the music. I think that both of these grandchildren are definitely mine as I would not want to do either of these activities. I, too, would rather stay "in my nest".

The Trail is an outdoor drama that goes on during the summer in Big Stone, still going on today. Just thinking about Aunt Virginia, Uncle Hop's other daughter, who never drove a car and never got to go anywhere. I imagine she had to stay home with Aunt Rose.

Footnote: So now maybe she put the peppers in bags to take to the market - where was there a "pepper market"? Millard works in Big Stone and that is where Edith lives. Appalachia is a town about 2 miles from Big Stone. Julia Slemp Music is her cousin and James is Julia's husband and Sally is their daughter. They lived and worked in Washington, D. C. area and I believe they would have still been there in 1965. Julia is Aunt Rose's oldest daughter, so they were probably there to see about Aunt Rose. I believe Jack Slemp is her nephew - the son of Millard's sister Valeria. Not sure about that - could have been a relative on Estelle's side of the family.

Footnote: Aunt Minnie (I can't think of her last name) lived nearby and I don't know why she called her Aunt. I think she was the Aunt of Carey Drew, Rosemary's husband. I know they are somehow connected.
Had a really good two day show in Lexington. I sold so many dolls that it will take me the next three weeks to restock. I also have a lot of orders for dolls that I have to make and mail. That is a good thing though. Weather was hot but I was lucky enough to have been assigned a spot under the trees. It makes my tent dark but I'll take that rather than the heat. We were fine for two days until about 15 minutes before the show was over at 5:00, it started to rain. Bummer as I had to pack the tent and it was wet, which means I had to leave it out on the driveway today to dry and then fold it up. I got it all done and just rested today.

I have been keeping Hope this week and she likes to stay home after Rachel leaves for work. I try to get there so she is not alone too long. She is 10 years old and runs their house so she is OK. I have a show in Kettering, Ohio (near Dayton) on Sunday so I am busy trying to finish dolls and cards for that. Which is why I have been late in blogging. I try to keep up but sometimes life gets in the way.

Three of the children he had with his first wife also died of flux at the same time as their mother died. Now he is left with 4 children so he found him another wife who happened to be the same age as the wife he just lost. That woman took on him and those 4 children and then she had 7 more. She lived to be 80 years old. Proof that hard work never killed a good woman - she just got old.

Reads everything she can get her hands on, including those small print "do's and don't's that come with every prescription - who does that??? She gets a lot of help from Janice and Doug and her neighbors pitch in with little things like the newspaper and garbage cans and mowing the grass. I try to clean out her fridge but I have to sneak to throw things away. She checks the garbage can to see what I have pitched. I'll be there to take her out to eat - she loves to eat out and she has a good appetite. I know you all have sent her cards - she told me - and she loves each of them. Thank you for doing that, it means a lot to her. She has very few friends left that are near her age, so she has to count on the younger friends to send her cards and call.

My Note: I got an invitation to attend a party being held at the home where Aunt Rose Reasor Slemp and Uncle Hop Slemp lived all their lives (that I knew them). Sally Musick who is the daughter of James and Julia Slemp Musick and Crystal Shuler Huff and her husband sent the invitation. Crystal is the daughter of Tim Shuler who is the son of Virginia Slemp and Harold Shuler. She is married and has two daughters who are named Rachel and Leah. I understand that Crystal is building a house on the hill above the barn beside Aunt Rose's home. I am wondering if they are planning to tear down the old house. I think it has been empty for a while now. It was a nice house with big rooms and a second floor. I loved the creek that ran thru the back yard. Aunt Rose always had ducks and their poop was all over the yard. I remember also she had gooseberry bushes along the walkway that lead up to the house. I think the ducks liked the gooseberries. Aunt Rose had a big collie dog who had pups on the screened in back porch of the house. We went to see the puppies and I leaned down to pick one up and the mother dog stuck her tooth right thru my upper lip. They had to take me to the hospital to get my lip sewed back together. I have a scar still there.
We visited Aunt Rose and Uncle Hop quite often. They were both very soft spoken, gentle people.
Sam & Janice still with us. Janice & I went down to Aunt Rose's late and then she went home.
Footnote: Janice is her daughter and Sam is Janice's friend. Aunt Rose is her mother's half-sister and she lives a couple of miles away.

I canned beans and planted some corn & beans.
My note: I am going to pack the car, tent and all and head off to Louisville to be in a 4th of July show, Friday and Sat. I have been in this show before so I know the layout. It is a small show, about 100 artists, and the people who run it are very nice. They have fireworks and ice cream. Hope I sell a few things.
I spent the day Wednesday with Hope and Max. Picked up Hope at the Y where she was with Rachel and then we drove to the ferry. Max rode the ferry over the river to where we were waiting.
We went to Dave and Buster's where they played games for a couple of hours. Max loves to go to Goodwill (looking for stuffed toys) so I took them to a big one and they both got a few things. Then we got caught in traffic when we crossed the bridge between Indiana and Kentucky. Next stop was Barnes and Noble where they both bought two books each - spent all my gift cards and I got nothing. See what I do for my grandchildren. After that we went to Texas Roadhouse where everybody had gathered for dinner and to hear Leslie and Mike announce the sex of their baby - IT"S A BOY. We are all so excited.

My note: I had a really nice week of training with this lady from the Netherlands. She spoke English with a heavy Dutch accent and she mumbled but I think I understood most of what she said. I think I need to have my hearing checked. I learned some new tricks about embroidery that I can use in my work. I lived in a dorm and had a nice roommate from Orange, California. The food was extremely delicious, mostly all from farmers in the area and the chef was excellent. So it was a nice week. I wish I could do that every year but it is expensive so I have to wait a couple of years before I can do it again.

My note: I have been in another show and this one was the worst ever. I drove 150 miles northeast on I-71 toward Columbus, Ohio and on to Granville, Ohio. Two things I found out the town is famous for - Dennison College and the corner in town that has a church of different religion on each of the 4 corners. Dennison is a private, very expensive school. I was told by my neighbor at the show, that " you have to have a lot of money to live in this town." She is married to a Dr. She didn't do any better that I did, she didn't sell anything. If they had money, they left it at home. It was hot and stormed both days. I closed up early on Sunday and came home. They were having a winefest at the same time , so they were all there just to taste the wine. Won't do that again!!

My Note: I survived another show - it was in a nice town - LaGrange, Ky. The town was lovely, full of little antique shops, cafes and gift shops. The interesting thing I found was the railroad tracks that run right thru the middle of town and there are 33 freight trains that travel thru town every day. The graffiti on the trains was amazing. The train traveled very slow thru town so it was fun to watch the graffiti show as it passed by. It is the main line between Louisville and Cincinnati - been there for years and the town was built around the tracks. I heard there was a camper parked on the street in town and the train came thru and took it out. That is how close the train is to the sidewalk. It is about 88 miles from Cincinnati, just about 20 miles East of Louisville. I was tired on Saturday night but not too tired to drive to Louisville to eat at my favorite Vietnamese restaurant - it was worth the trip. I'll recover because I have another show I have to set up on Friday in Granville, Ohio (Near Columbus)

The weather has been just perfect all week - cool and the sunshine has not been too warm. That will all change as soon as I get to the park where the show will be. This is a new show for me. It is 85 miles from here, just this side of Louisville. I hope it is a good show.
So I am going to go ahead and post the next two days so I am not behind.
Janice, Rosemary and I went to town awhile. Tonite we all went up to Maxfields to a auction sale.

We all went to Patricia Ann & Ron's today at Whitesburg today. Edith with us too. It was a hard trip.
Footnote: Patricia Ann is her niece, Edith's daughter - that's me. Ron was my husband of two years then and we lived in a mobile home that was parked behind the radio station in Whitesburg Kentucky. What a way to start!!!. It was about an hour's drive over the mountain so I hope that is what she thought was hard. It was a hard place to be living - dirty and dreary - . We moved that year in the fall to Richmond, Ky. when Ron decided he wanted to go to college at Eastern Kentucky, while I supported us working as a social worker for the state. We had the trailer moved onto the campus and he went to school every day and worked at the radio station on the weekend . I worked every day and took classes on Saturday. We did that for a year and he was called to a job in Louisville, Ky. So we packed that trailer again and moved to a trailer park in Louisville. I transferred with the state to a social work position in Louisville. Eventually we bought a house in Louisville. I loved living in Louisville. So that is the story of the Mobile home.

I got Benton Kelly to set out the pepper today. Allso had 3 1/2 crates of berries picked.
Footnote: Benton Kelly is a neighbor and farmer. I think he is the one that we always got watermelons from. He had a sharp knife and would stick it in the watermelon and cut a small square and pull it out to see if the watermelon was ripe. It was called "Plugging" and it was the best bite.

Sat. Fair.
I peddled, come home. Pearl come by. I picked a few berries and took Aunt Rose some. Linda & Doug were in awhile.
Footnote: Pearl Reasor Barkley is her cousin. Aunt Rose is her mother's half-sister. Linda Salley is now married to Doug Shuler - Estelle's nephew. I think they didn't get married until July of 1965.
I am going downtown to have lunch on the river with Hope and her class. They are visiting the Underground Railroad Museum which is downtown on the river and they will then go to Sawyer Point - a park on the river for lunch.. Then I am going for a pedicure and to Barnes and Noble for a fix and then to Leah's for the weekend. Leah and Kenny are going camping at Laurel Lake, near London, Ky. with his very large family and Max doesn't want to go. So I will stay with him and the dogs. We will hit all the yard sales in the morning - Sat. His favorite thing to do. He is very easy to stay with so I will be able to stuff a lot of dolls. So I will catch up on the blog on Tues. when I get back home.
