January 15, 1979, Monday Aunt Estelle wrote

Clear.  6 degrees.  Wendi had to come down.  Wise County schools out because of snow.  I washed sheets and hung them out.  Sewed some.  Curtis was in.  I went up to Jennings late.

Footnote:   Wendi is her granddaughter who lives in Big Stone Gap, Va. which is in Wise County.   What, she washed and hung sheets outside to dry - it is 6 degrees.   Must have warmed up quickly or she is one tough woman.   Curt is her brother-in-law.  Jennings is her brother who lives nearby.

Here are some interesting things I found in a little Southern States notebook at my Mother's house.  Those of you from the area know what Southern States was.  Others  - Southern States was a big store that sold feed for cattle and all the other things that were needed to run a farm - fencing, posts, wire, cutters - whatever was needed.

Put a book of matches (matches up) and then plant peppers cabbage tomatoes
Don't plant onions & peas close to each other.
Plant radishes under squash & cucumbers.
Burn an old leather shoe or glove about every 30-45 days   will keep the snakes away.
plant little onions in close to rose bush and no bugs will bother.

Happy Birthday to Travis Edward Shuler - # 40.
